Title: Cocker Coat - Confusion
Post by: paddys mum on November 10, 2004, 08:52:03 PM
Being the naive cocker owners that we are, we were reading on another site about working cockers having different coats to show cockers or so the site said. We were wondering if this is true, that a working cockers coat is less curly and flat. As paddys mum (she is a working cocker) was like this. We just thoght we d ask the experts.
Cheers
Nicola and Phill

Sorry just read the other threads we didn't realise that there was a difference until we saw it in the other site. Oops, even though we ve had Paddy for the last10 weeks and wouldn't be without the little monkey! Like I said before we are extremely niave and obviously still learning.
Thanks anyway
Nicola and Phill

Hello Nicola & Phil,
A working Cocker's coat is not necessarily less curly or flatter than it's Show bred cousin.
The standard says that a show Cockers coat should be flat & silky & not curly  ;)
You will probably find though that the feathering will be less profuse on a Working bred dog.
Having said that, there will always be exceptions to every rule !!  :)

Thanks for that Kim, Paddy is only 19 weeks old so there is plenty of time for him to fluff out yet.
Nicola, Phill and Paddy of course.  :D

Hi Phil & Nicola

Rusty is a full red cocker, his coat is not long at all,he has a few swirls here and there but it is mostly very flat. There is pictures of him in the gallery somewhere as they were posted when we got him should actually post some new ones.  But we were a little disappointed that he was not going to be fluffy, talking about being niave we didn't know there were flat and fluffy.
Anyway hope this is of some help.

Elle & Rusty xx :D

Thank you for the reply, we have looked at Rusty and he looks lovely! Paddy is quite similiar but black with a white chest, maybe we should put a picture of him on there too.
Cheers

Bella has no coat to speak of.  She is short coated and has very little if any feathering.  Her ears are longish for a labarador but short for a spaniel.  We thought she was a working cocker from the descriptions, but the vet and her pedigree say she is show.

I too am dissappointed that she will probably never look like a true show cocker, but she has a great personality which makes up for it  :D  Also takes no time to bath her.  :D

Poor Paddy has no feathering and a very flat black coat, we agree about his personality that more than makes up for anything else. Paddy loves to have a shower usually when Im washing my hair. He tends to try - but sometimes manages - to jump in too, and have a shower which doesn't take long to do either. At least he doesn't take too much grooming at the moment any way. Thanks for the reply. Say hi to Bella from Paddy.
