Runny Eyes
« on: August 05, 2007, 10:16:36 AM »
Not sure if this should be in Puppies or Health - sorry Moderators ! ;)

Do any of your puppies have runny eyes?  Honey has had runny eyes since we got her, it's just clear watery stuff, not infected or anything.  We asked the vet if it was normal and he said yes and sometimes they grow out of it, sometimes not.  Just wondered if any of yours had runny eyes and if so, have they grown out of it.

It makes her look even sadder ! :005:

Harvey has had runny eyes, and does seem to be growing out of it, although he does seem to have massive eye bogies in the morning  :o

Yes, Coco had it when she was a baby.  In her case it was caused by the eyelids turning in slightly and the lashes rubbing on the eye and irritating it - the official name is entropian.  It didn't bother her though and the vet said to wait until she was one to see if it rectified itself.  It didn't so she had an op to fix it and they are fine now.  If it is clear and not irritating Honey I would just wipe them and see how it goes as your vet suggests.  I also used to bathe them with cold black tea which helped too.

Milo had slightly runny eyes in the inner corner. Only clear liquid and v. little of it. Asked vet and he suggested it could be slightly blocked tear ducts, however Milo (15wks) seems to have been growing out of it recently as it has cleared up.

Elisa- Milo gets big eye bogies too-  :005: he hates it when i wipe them away!

Thanks guys.

Honey doesn't seem to get bogies, but her eyes do run a lot, unless she's asleep, when they seem to stop.

How old were yours when they grew out of it?

I think I'm right in saying that Honey is still a young puppy?

At around 16 weeks puppies lose their baby teeth and the adult ones come through. During this time it can cause their eyes to water, and some pups will also have droopy lower eyelids.

Hi Michele,

Yes, Honey is only 11 weeks old, I never thought that it might have something to do with her teeth.

Thanks ;)
