How far did you walk your puppy at first?

Hi just wondered how far everyone thinks is enough for lickle legs we have always taken it very steady~What does everyone else think?

I think the guide is 5 min for each month of age.  Darby is 11.5 weeks so she gets 10-15min 3 times a day.  Twice is on the field so soft ground, the other is 10 min around the block.

I could be wronge but i would think joggin would put alot of pressure on the joints and shouldn't be done until dogs are over one and done most of their growing

Agree with this.  The rule is 5 mins per month of age until a year when the bones and joints should be more or less fully developed

Good thinking - you could always put pup in a backpack if you desperately want to jog though

I'm going to try and survive a year of not jogging in the cold wind, rain and snow(climate change and all). It'll be hard and a HUGE sacrifice but for my puppy I will do it.   Don't want to end up being fitter than Harvey with all that years worth of extra exercise!!

I know what you mean...its a terrible hardship for us healthy, fit outdoor types...having to restrict our exercise for the sake of our pups  . I didn't know about the 5 minute rule until my first visit to the vet for her jabs. I was like...when can I take her up the hill? The vets answer was...oh, you can take her now as long as she's in a back pack! I do tend to let Chloe have a mad run around on her first walk (about 25 mins now) but her evening walk is much more sedate!

We took Darcey into the Peaks on Saturday. She walked (skipped through puddles, rolled in bogs) for 20 mins then my husband towelled her off and carried a soaked, shouting filthy pup who wanted to be back on the floor  We walked for about 1.5 hours and she did a 20 minute walk at the beginning and again at the end. I bought her a coat to wear when we are carrying her so she doesn't get cold and we have a rucksack to shove her in too 

For me puppies' walks are about experience more than exercise and she had the most amazing time - and a taster of years of hiking ahead. We do 15 minute strolls round the park/ block too in the week but it's nice to expose her to different things. Also the terrain at the weekend was very soft so kinder on her tiny joints than pavements anyway.
