Can cocker spaniels puppies colour change?
« on: December 17, 2009, 12:36:10 AM »
Hi everyone

I have 2 7 months old cocker spaniel girls whom were chocolate and registered as brown when they where born. However i have noticed that coco is definately darkening and her back is almost black now - both of her parents were black cockers, her sister chocolate remains her chocolate brown colour. I wondered if coco will go completely black eventually? Both dogs dispite being sisters have different coats completely, coco has a more sleek coat where as chocolate is more fluffy.

Has anyone with more Knowledge and experience of cocker spaniels got any information as to the changing of cocker spaniels colour and coat textures?

Many thanks in advance

Could the chocolate appearance be puppy fluff.....  If you look at the pic of Charlie, he looks quite brown but he's definately black, he just needs stripping out the dead coat  :-\ Would of thought as a very young pup at registration there wouldn't be fluff to disguise the colour though...

Roans appear to change significantly as their coats grow and the roaning materialises  :-\

Are they full show cockers. My girl has a bit of working cocker in her pedigree and stayed quite sleek, but when I saw pictures of her brother he was a lot fluffier.

No idea about the colour sorry  :D

Thanks for the replies,

They are both full working cocker spaniels, But i am just mistified why coco back is appearing darker - when they go back to their groomers, they have already had their monthly bath, and are not  due a trim until 5th of january, I will ask her just what she thinks to the change in her colour. I only noticed just how dark her back has become and that she is looking more black there than anywhere else now. I really must update the photos - just havent had the time to take any new ones lately.  I love walking my girls and they enjoy hours on our fields with me.

Our blue roan was a light grey with a black spot on her side when we first got her as a puppy. When her adult coat came in she turned mostly black with grey and white streaks.
