Woo Hoo Breakthrough
« on: March 04, 2010, 10:42:04 PM »
Im so happy at the moment took Bobby (normally the  >:D incarnate) to puppy class yesterday and he was fantastic! He has only been going 6 weeks and already theyre on about moving him up to the next class! Problem is in the next one there are alot or aggressive dogs and dont want this to rub off on him. Also as the next one up is full of adult labs, great danes etc i'm not sure if Bobby is ready for this as he is only 5months old and still really small especially compared to them! Any ideas or should i just let him play up next week?

If it was me I would stay in the puppy class a bit longer. I did puppy classes with Bonnie Boo then waited a little while before trying out a class for adult dogs, she didnt like it at all so i stopped going. I found that meeting other dogs on our walks away from the confines of a room was a lot better. She has become a very well socialised little dog.

What do you mean by aggressive dogs, and if there are a lot of them  :o - most dog trainers, well in my experience of looking and going to training don't allow aggressive dogs in training groups and always recommend one to one training for aggression.    I'd be worried about taking my puppy into a training class with "alot of aggressive dogs".

Congratulations on Bobby doing so well though - what a star  :luv:     Maybe you can speak to your trainer about the other dogs and whether they are a danger.

Well my sister's lab is in the class and she is the one who complains mainly about a greyhound and a westie I think. I know she did say something to the trainer the other day as she was sure the owner of the greyhound was letting his dog do it on purpose! >:( The only problem is that now a select few of the other puppy owners are starting to get a bit jealous and nasty! I overheard one sayin they would rather dump a small dog than own one  >:( and after all the praise he was getting yesterday we then had to do recall. As normally Bobby is really good at this as he never wants to leave my side i decided that maybe my 5yr old (going on 50) niece should try as she always comes with us. Anyway to cut a long story short I let him off the lead and he decided it was playtime >:D my niece was already gutted about him not doing as he should when these select few started to laugh >:( even though theirs do it all the time i never laugh at them because it can be really frustrating! Emily (my niece) was then inconsolable, so being childish as i am ive told her next week if thiers do that she has to laugh as loud as she can :005:

That is disgusting behaviour and laughing at a 5 year old - I can't post on here what I would have said obviously out of earshot of the child.    It sounds like the owners need some training in good manners   >:(

TBH with other people like that around I wouldn't go to the classes. It can be so stressful anyway that you don't want negative attitudes like that around you, sounds like being back at school!

There are only a small few who do that and to be honest I find it funny, really its a compliment that they are sooooo jealous :005: Bobby really loves the class and has found lots of new friends , but cant wait for emily to laugh new week (she has a wicked laugh)

It can be very off-putting when other people laugh at you.  Mind you when we started puppy class everyone was starting at the same time so none of the dogs would do decent recall.  It was quite funny trying to make yourself the most interesting thing in the room for your dog to come back to when they just pretended you didn't exist and we all used to laugh at each other's attempts, but it was always in a nice way.  As time went on it got a little more competitive by some.  Unfortunately Ozzy was the 'vocal' one in the group and spent most of his time barking in the corner getting funny looks from other owners.  So we stopped going in the end and carried on training on our own at home.
