Looking for advice
« on: July 18, 2012, 06:24:59 PM »
Hi Ive had Bella for a few weeks now and we have started getting somewhere with toilet training, thank goodness, but I have been wondering if some of her other behaviours have been experienced by others she bounces like a kangaroo if she wants what's in your hand, she bites everything that goes near her, this I was expecting but even saying ouch doesn't work, hoping she'll grow out of that tho and she uses her front paws like a cat does to pull things close to her. I am trying to train her and I'm hoping she'll calm down a bit more when she goes out, can food contribute to behaviour?
Thanks Tracy

My Lily does the grab you with her front paws too  :luv:  Oh yeah and the kangaroo jumping thing when she wants something I've got and it's out of reach  :005:

I've found completely ignoring her works wonders  :shades:  She hates to think I'm mad at her or I'm upset with her, so by turning my back and refusing to look/speak to her works well but I only do it for a short while as she gets very upset  :'(   I give her a 'NO' or Leave command depending on what she's doing and if she doesn't listen then ignore/leave the area - it doesn't take long before she comes looking for me  :005:   The I give her a command even if it's just a sit or down which she usually does instantly as she sooo wants to make it up, then give her some cuddles  :luv:

Our last cocker Freddie used to do the grabbing thing - if you were stroking his brisket or ears and stopped he'd just grab you and pull your hand in back to him - it was adorable! I'm hoping my new pup will do it too (I will at least teach him "paw" which I think he'll be able to do, as I've managed to teach him sit today (aged 72 days!)). No advice on the kangaroo thing I'm afraid.

Glad it just seems to be semi normal cocker behaviour, Im gonna have to get better at ignoring her kangarooing I'm looking into training for after her jabs and already have puppy class sorted hopefully activity and boundaries will help as well  ;)

Hi Tracy

I thought we had purchased a Springer instead of a Cocker Spaniel when Miya first came home. She would spring into the air when there was anything out of reach.

Have you enrolled your pup for training classes as this would promote good behaviour before the bad habits take hold :happydance:

Seems like she's just being a puppy, up to everything and in everywhere :005:

Hi Tracy welcome to the world of cockers they can be a bit full on
and food can pay apart in there behaviour... what are you feeding Bella?
foods can make a dog hyper, especially if it has high protein levels in it
but i think in your case its just down to cocker puppy being a cocker

Bella's on Eukanuba puppy at the minute she was on wagg but I didn't think the quality was good and got the other as a free sample, Ive not enrolled in training classes yet as I didn't like the last one I looked at we will be starting puppy class in a few weeks so hoping someone will be able to recommend classes  :D

Have you thought about a BARF diet (raw feeding)
