Socialisation
« on: April 25, 2007, 03:38:17 PM »
Other than being at home with my other cocker Molly and going to MIL's at the weekend to see her 2 cockers, Honey (10 weeks old) hasn't had any other form of socialisation.

So today i decided to take her up to school with me to pick my son up. I carried her up there and then let her down when we were in the school yard.

She was an absolute angel, didnt bat an eye lid when all the chidren (and parents) came over to stroke her. She was wagging her tail and giving out her special cocker kisses!!!!

A few people thought she was a Cavalier King Charles  >:( but i guess its an easy mistake to make!

The parents were astonished that i travelled to Derbyshire to get her though, they were saying "OMG, Why travel that far? Its only a dog!!!!" I nearly smacked them - only a dog!!!

I think Honey did very well, only another 2 weeks until she can come on walks properly and i cant wait!!

Sounds like she did brilliantly.  :luv:  :luv: Keep carrying her as many places as you can - i didnt socialise Hurley as much as I should have done especially with small furries, small children, horses etc and to be honest it has meant lots of work for me. If I could do it all again I would really make the effort with taking him to schools and places like pets at home so he could experience rabbits and if possible places where he would 'meet' horses/cows etc

Well done Honey  :luv:

I agree keep carrying her out, I did this successfully with my retriever (4 years ago now) until she was too big to carry any longer.  :005:  It does wonders for them.

Keep up the good work.  :D

I carried Jesse everywhere for the first five weeks he was with us and not vaccinated yet and it is already paying off. He is a confident little chap and doesn't normally take long at all to get used to new things. Last week-end I took him to college with me, the college is a working farm, so Jesse met lots of cows, horses, sheep, ducks etc. A little bit weary at first and after a little bit of a bark, he soon walked through the college grounds like a pro and didn't bat an eye lid anymore.

She needs as many nice experiences as possible.  I did this with Charley as soon as he was able to go for walks.

Fortunately, my next door neighbours had their grand-son staying with them - he was about two years of age - and Charley loved playing with him.  The two of them used to chase around the garden and have high jinks.  Consequently, Charley loves children and will play with anyone.
