Can anyone help please? I've got the video and that dog doesn't look that hairy! Where do you stop hand stripping and start scissoring the ears? I don't want to spoil the top of her head, but I'm not sure if the hair should pull out or be scissored at the very top of the ears.

I hand strip tops of heads and use thinning scissors on the ears.

It's the where to stop hand stripping the head and start scissoring I'm not sure about. She can look a bit like one of those funny little penguins with tufty bits. Don't want to scissor where I should handstrip and spoil her coat.

I hand strip the head to the top of the ears and then use the thinning scissors from the very top of the ears to about a 1/3rd of the way down, hope that makes sense?

Thanks Michelle. Think I've been trying to handstrip too far down, she is very patient bless her. Probably thinking "bloomin' woman, doesn't she know it won't pull out". Will scissor a bit higher up tomorrow night. I'm so worried about catching the edge of her ears though.

Is that how you get the head nice and smooth?? My old dog Rosie's head used to look a mess! Could always tell id been at her with the scissors, Bless her! :luv:

If you lay the ear out flat with your other hand you should find it easier to get any flicked up bits (technical expression :005:)

I had a go, and although not perfect, she looks much better than before. I feel a bit braver now. I was expecting to be able to handstrip further down.
Thanks Michelle.
(Although Teal looked like a haystack tonight :lol2: as she had been rolling in the field and managed to collect all the dried grass in her coat!)

Good on you for having a go, practice makes perfect as they say. :shades:
Don't know where abouts you live but maybe you'd like to come along to this

Hi, I'd spotted that in Dog World and thought it sounded good. I'm in North Lincolnshire so it's a bit too far to go! We'll keep practising.
Thanks for your help. (COL' great isn't it? Especially for the likes of me who is surrounded by blooming collies)

As The Solid Colours Cocker is not a regional club we tried to find a fairly central location for the forthcoming workshop. Perhaps you could contact one of the clubs that are located further north and ask them if they have any plans? :D

Me too!! Would love to learn how to do a decent job on the poor girl. :005:
I did go to a grooming seminar a couple of years ago, just off the A1, one of the dogs was a springer (which until last October, I also had), was a bit shocked to see them get the clippers out; but it was someone who groomed for competition rather than someone who handstripped and scissored for show.
