Title: Going to attempt first walk out today :)
Post by: Sarahingarforth on June 14, 2014, 10:03:10 AM
After three weeks at home it's time to take Poppy out! Got to admit I'm a bit nervous as we've tried her on the less in the garden and it's been a bit hit and miss (trying to chew the lead etc) but we'll see! Of course the promised sunshine in Yorkshire has turned into rain too but hey ho!

Awwww. Good luck, it's a real puppy milestone. Don't be too concerned if she isn't very keen. Cola sent the first month or so Not wanting to leave the driveway... I had to really make getting out of the driveway very exciting (distracting with a squeaky toy etc) and sometimes carrying her up the path to the park.
It is only more recently (she is 6 months) that she gets really excited about walks!

Look forward to hearing all about it.

I think the first few walks are usually hit and miss and 'interesting' for all sorts of reasons.

As Chickenpie suggests take a squeaky toy and some yummy treats...and don't attempt to go too far - hope it goes well.

We're back! And she seemed to enjoy it! There was a moment when a big dog barked at her from behind a gate and she got a bit scared but all in all she was really good.

She was exhausted by the end though and we only went for about 15 mins but I guess she only has little legs! :-)

Glad she enjoyed it, apart from the big scary dog :D

15 minutes is probably long enough at her age. It's best to keep to the 5 minute rule as much as possible when they're puppies, especially if walking on lead and on hard surfaces. If you don't know the rule, it's 5 minutes walking for every month of age. So at 3 months that's 15 minutes per walk, although you can do that more than once a day and if she's off lead, on grass and has opportunities to rest then a bit longer won't hurt.

It's to help prevent damage to developing joints and limbs.

Thanks Elaine - bit nervous about letting her off the lead in case she does a runner! Although she will generally come to you if you call her in the garden :)

It might sound daft, but be careful if it's very hot. George hates the pavements and tarmac in hot weather as they get so hot and refuses to move. If you are a first time dog owner you might not be aware of how hot they get.  :D

So glad it went well minus the big Barky dog. She's out in the world  :luv: :luv:

Good tip about the pavements in the heat as another newbie I hadn't really thought about it.

Well done Poppy, those big barky dogs scare me too, especially when you're not expecting it!

Don't be scared to let her off the lead. Puppies tend to stick to their owners until they get a little older and more confident. It's a great time to train recall with some treats. Henry never strayed too far when he was little, and always came back when called! Not quite the same now though......... :005:

Thanks all! We had a little wander again too today. Encountered another couple of dogs and she started trembling again but they didn't bark so she wasn't too bad. One thing we have discovered - I'm amazed at the number of people who clearly don't pick up after their dogs - how could you not?!

Unfortunately there are a lot of dog owners that do not pick up their dogs mess. If I ever see anyone not doing it I will say something but my guess is that they will only leave it if there was is no one arond to see.

Don't worry too much about your dog being nervous around other dogs. Murphy used to scream if one came running up to him. Now all he wants to do is play with every dog he meets.
