Hiya!
I am planning to take Max to The Netherlands from Ireland in a month (he will then be 4 months old) it is only a 1hr40 flight so not too long, but of course i'm worried sick if this is the right thing to do. I will be staying for a month and we will be staying with my parents surrounded by woods and fields, so he will have the time of his life :)
He will be too large to travel in the cabin so I he will have to go in the hold of the plane...
He is being crate trained so he is well used to staying in a crate. I am planning to buy one specific for travel soon so he can get used to it being his safe place.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Hoping for some tips and advise!

I have seen dogs bigger than a 4 mth old puppy on KLM flights, but it was a few years back.
I am sure Max will be fine - I have no experience but my friend took her dog to Australia 3 years ago and with the distance she was worried sick. Emirates were brilliant and as the dog had a stay over in Dubai she was so concerned at the fact Benny left 24 hours before ther.
The family story goes that the first thing she said when she landed and phoned her son was has Benny arrived is he ok. When cleared custom etc and greeted her son and grandchild was again about Benny...who flew through his ordeal with flying colours :005:and happily settled to his new life in Oz

I wouldn’t know specific Irish regulations, but when daughter flew to Greece, and later back again, we were all still in the EU. The preparation was pretty heavy. Read your government dept website for stipulations. Then read the info from the commercial pet transporters to see their recommendations. We used one of them the first time.
Basically you have to buy an airline approved crate that can support water bowl, the right size for a standing dog to turn round, and tamper proof bolts. They always look big. It has to bee a solid walled crate with wire door and a handle.
The airline will have a section on the website.
From UK, before Brexit, Health paperwork needed the pet passport, from your vet, vaccinations , fitness to fly, and presumably rabies vaccine, with testing after 3 weeks. Worming by the vet the day before. Now of course UK rules are even more complicated. We left the dogs at Heathrow reception centre, caught the same flight, and met them at the animal reception in Greece, where paperwork is scrutinised again. Any mistake, like wrong tickbox or the clear plastic sticky sheet not on the right signature , is trouble, it’s to stop forgeries, but they can phone your vet to check.
You can’t give your dog any tranquillers , so a nervous one will be scared of the noise . However, the cats survived!
Have you looked into driving? You can take your dog for strolls and feeding on ferries. I don’t know about Ireland to Uk . The North Sea from Felixstowe is a night ferry, and they have kennels, or special dog areas to share.
I have no idea whether touching paws on UK ground puts them into another situation.
My cocker loved the ferries to the Hebrides, a good five hours.
It’s worth checking everything, a month in kennels or staying with another household without you, is a shame. Personally, I’m not going anywhere!

I don’t know very much about the topic but I think there may be a minimum age a dog can be transported via air freight, it may be different if accompanied. Worth checking as 4 months is quite young even though it’s a short flight. Good luck with your travels and taking your dog with you.

Is it possible for you to get the ferry instead? I've done that before - there was an onboard kennel you could book so you didn't need to leave them in the car

Thank you all for the replies. I did all the research and unfortunately if taking the ferry the journey would be an overnight one with 2 boats which I think might cause more stress than 1.40 on the plane... therefore I changed tot the plane.
Minimum age is 3 months, I know 4 months is still very young, but I will get some advise from the vet as well. He's a super healthy pup, so hopefully all will be grand :)
