Title: Weird behaviour.
Post by: JohnMcL on May 29, 2021, 12:35:48 AM
Hi, Nutty is nearly 16 weeks and the last 24 hours have been strange. Last night we came back from visiting a friend around 11pm, she entered the house looking nervous and was thrashing at the stair gate to get upstairs; she doesn’t go upstairs. She appeared to want to sleep upstairs so I made a bed up.

Today she’s not interested in food, not even treats - that’s unheard of.
Tonight she indicated she wanted a poop, took her out, 2 mins later she shot back to the front door (she never wants to come in early) and thrashed at the stair gate again. I was curious so I opened the gate. Big mistake. Curiosity got me a big brown ‘pattern’ on my new duvet  >:D
She seems anxious, she’s alert at the tiniest noise, she’s sits on the nearest sofa to the front door, we don’t use that sofa. A feint noise and she’s alert, looking at the door, if she thinks somebody is there she whimpers and jumps on my lap. Nothing has changed, there’s nothing to be scared of and I trained her to go to her crate if the doorbell rings, she’s usually really good at that.

I can only think of teething. I’ve been gently rubbing the back of her jaws (where our wisdom teeth come), I can’t feel anything but she likes it.

Does anybody else think this is teething please? I can’t feel any wobbly ones and she was missing a front lower tooth when i got her at 8 weeks, all the rest are still present I think.

Thanks.

John.

Very strange and nothing obvious springs to mind . I do think teething can be responsible for a lot of maladies (doctors always deny it but both my children had high temperatures and runny tummies when they were teething! :shades:), so its a possibility. A tip which I picked up from COL was to freeze some joghurt and give it to her to bite on, if she is teething, it will help soothe her gums. There are also wooden chewing blocks which you can get from the pet shops.
A bit of a shot in the dark, but could there be something outside which she can hear ? e,g, one of those sonar alarms that people install in the garden?
It‘s times like these when you SO wish they could talk!  :luv:

It’s at this age they go through their scared stage - this why socialisation is so vital to not just other dogs and humans etc in the first 14 weeks or so but to everything they will come into contact with

Ash got a fright because someone moved a BBQ last Friday (bbq night down the local) last night it was already in place when we got there and she didn’t want to walk past it

When the front door opens now and I am in the study (she is with me) she will bark and growl - the other day it was dog sitter and Ash poked her head round the corner growled and barked and ran back to me for me to protect her  :005: :005: she loves her dog sitter really

Teething wise I freeze carrots for her to chew on less calories than yoghurt- but be warned they can’t digest carrot so you will find it when you pick up  :shades: just like humans can’t digest sweetcorn

Hi Jayne & Cazza, thanks for replying. My kids were the same Jayne, high temps and bright red cheeks and you’re right I remember docs dismissing teething too!
Cazza, I didn’t know about a scared stage but it makes sense. I thought I’d socialised Nutty fairly well but I guess you can’t cover everything, last night she met a May Bug which was great fun for her. I’m not a fan of large flying insects so I’m afraid I watched from the kitchen window. I introduced her to cattle several times but not amorous deer so she wants to be carried when they start at midnight!

I had forgotten the importance of socialising at the pub! We’ll be sure to get some practice in!  ;) :lol2: :lol2:

Forgetting the importance of socialisation down the pub is not surprising since they have been shut for so long  ;)
