Title: Puppy Coat? When Will She Be A Fluff Ball?
Post by: Gini on October 06, 2005, 11:14:52 AM
I'm sure I've read about this in the past, but can't find it now. Willow 17 wks has a very silky, short, straight coat. Bit of feathering on front legs but nothing else.
I keep coming down to her in the morning expecting her to have turned into a fluff ball overnight (as I'm sure someone said!) When should I expect something to happen? What is a puppy coat? There's nothing much to groom even though I do it anyway.

Jem is about 22 weeks and she is a fluff ball now although when we got her at 9 weeks she was all shortly and silky. To be honest I can't really say when she started getting fluffy although pics tend to suggest about 12 weeks? I think she is starting to shed her puppy coat though as I am combing out three times as much every other day.

Jem is a solid black and I think they tend to have thicker, fluffier coats anyway.

Dillon who is a solid chocolate, nearly 16 weeks old, has been a fluff ball from approx 7 weeks!!!!
He has got fluffier since then, he has very curly hair on his legs and sides, very curly fluffy ears, and a riduculous tuft of curls on the top of his head.   His back on the other hand is quite smooth - by no means short, but quite smooth....
Oh, and he has a full tail and is developing the loveliest corkscrew curl on the end of his tail

If this carries on I will be spending a lot of time at the groomers when he is fully grown....(alternatively the clippers will have to come out...eek......)

As I am reading the above, I'm sure she has some new pale golden tufts on her back legs! Maybe I'm just too desperate.

Please someone tell me that their Cocker was a bit of a baldy at 17 wks. I'll have to get my husband to help me post a recent photo so you can say whether you agree or not.

How is their puppy coat different from their adult coat? Maybe she'll just miss that bit out?

Just got back from physio, I sprained my ankle 9 wks ago, the day I got Willow, I'd only had her 5 mins, I must have been so excited I missed the curb getting into the car.

Our Max is almost 20 weeks & his coat/curls sound identical to Dillon except he's black! He's been fluffy/curly since day 1 but funnily enough, he's the only 1 in his litter of 5 that is - the others are all still very smooth & skinny looking, whereas Max looks like a little chubby bear!!

Soooooooooooooooooooo cute!!

Lots of grooming though - hubby & I had to scissor trim some of his fur inbetween the pads of his feet & also down his legs the other day, cos it was getting like Ronald McDonald!!  He just sat there & let us do it while we periodically shoved little treats in his direction - he's such a sucker for them - he'll do anything if it means he gets to fill his belly!!

I have noticed that their coats vary hugely; not just between colours/solids/roan etc, but there do seem to be smooth and silky coated cockers and thick and curly coated cockers - in all colours and markings  :)

Obviously the working cocker coat is different again - so a dog with working cocker in its close ancestry may have a different type of coat as well

From what I can work out the fine, silky coat tends to knot horribly easily and the thick curly coat tends to get really dirty/burry. The thick and curly variety seem to be far fluffier as puppies than the smooth and silky variety   I'm not sure which I'd prefer; but Molo is of the Thick and Curly variety  ;)

Ghillie is nearly 16 wks and she has a short smooth silky coat, the feathering on her legs is starting to come and the fur on her ears is curly, she also has a little corkscrew at the end of her tail, she comes from working lines.

Pepsi is 8 months and a solid black with a thick curly coat. She became a fluff ball very quickly and I can see I will either need to invest in come clippers and get brave  B)  or take her to be groomed about every 6 weeks. She went 2 weeks ago and is already starting to look scruffy

Inca is 22 weeks and I'm asking the opposite, when will she STOP being a fluff ball......lol.  Actually I think it is slowly changing, I can see the fur down the middle of her back growing out flatter and not so fluffy.

Hi my lovely Bailey boy is 17 weeks (wow where did the time go??) and he is solid black and so fluffy. I went ahead and invested in some clippers because Wow. We are still working on his feet. I'm afraid to cut really close to the pads so poor Bay is slipping and slideing everywhere! He's such a sweety. Beautiful temperment....

At about 5 months, Barley (who was a solid gold) grew eyebrows and side muzzle fluff, and she looked like a walrus !!

By 10/11 months, she was totally gorgeous - she looked like a mini-Afghan with beautiful blonde hair on her head that we would plait and style and flowing hair on her lower sides and legs ....  I must scan in some old photos and post them ...

Their puppy hair is a softer version of adult coat - their top coat is smoother and silkier than it ever will be and their undercoat is less dense ...

My Bailey looked exactly the same as Willow did when he was that young.  Apart from his ears, he looked like a golden lab puppy

Now he has to go to the groomers every 8 weeks just to look neat and tidy!!!  ;)

Phew, thanks for that. I know what you mean about looking like a Lab. I will wait with anticipation.

Thanks. I do suspect that Willow is growing a tuft on the top of her head! Also some whiskers on her hind heels. Willow's mum could have had plats. I will try to be patient. Thanks for that about the puppy coat, it seems quite obvious now but I wasn't sure.

I'd love to see the before and after photos of Barley.

I looked out an old photo for you of Bailey as a pup.  As you can see, he didnt have the long flowing locks either.  But it soon comes in.

Bailey - about 14-16 weeks.

Thanks for the photos. What a sweety pie. I can stop worrying now and just BE PATIENT. Although it's propably quite good that I'm not desperate for her to stay a puppy.

I have a 15 week working cocker and I am waiting for her to turn ino a fluff ball, but when reading other topics on this web site I didn't realize the huge difference between working and showing cockers.

Will my working cocker turn into a fluff ball or will she be completely different all together.  I will love her all the same, only it would be interesting to know?

paddy is a show/worker puppy.he has a thick short glossy coat he is 20 wks today.his ears are fairly long but not quite show cocker long.his feathering is starting to thicken out now and he is developing a short skirt.the fur on his back has ripples in it now so don't know if that means it's getting longer and finally he has a tufty head!he is so handsome.though when i bought him i didn't realise he had working dog in him and felt a little disapointed he wasn't going to develop the gorgeous show coat i had dreamt of.thinking about it his ears seem different every time i look at him sometimes they seem to be sitting higher than other times and if he is begging for something he can drop them so low they look like they may touch the floor. :rolleyes:i honestly wouldn't change him for a million pounds even though he can sometimes drive me insane i love the little fella to bits. :)

   Bramble is now 9 months old ( :o )   and has an "Affro"!!!!!!!   She's a solid black.  The lady who grooms her just couldn't believe it when she saw her last and we get a full carrier bag of fluff everytime she has a hair cut, which is now 8 weeks....  she still has 2 to go, but already needs another major strim!!!!!  Her puppy fluff is starting to come out, but there is just soooooooooooooooo much of it!!!!!  I sometimes think she'll never have that beautiful, glossy flowing coat....
Her legs are unreal too - the hair is sooooo thick all the way round, and soooooo long, her legs join together in the middle!!!!  And she also has that "chimney sweep brush" effect at the end of her tail!!

She started off really shiny and glossy - I can't remember when she grew her fluff - it really did seem like one day, we came downstairs and it was there!!!!  Makes her look really fat too!!

I felt exactly the same way, when we got her although I knew she was a working cocker I didn't realize how different they would be, and I felt disapointed as I have an image in my head of how she would be

But like you said even with all that, I would change her for the world, she is perfect the way she is, fluff or no fluff
