Title: Make the most of now
Post by: Meganmaid on September 26, 2007, 12:01:23 AM
Hi,
My name is Dave.
I need to get this off my chest so if you are reading  this thanks for listening and please forgive me not being great with words.
Be warned. This is not a happy tail.
I have always loved dogs, despite my first experience with them being bitten by one!

After 10 years of being with my girlfriend I proposed, she thankfully said yes and we made arrangements to see the vicar etc etc. Whilst the church was well known by my fiancé the vicar was not and when we went to see him for the first time he just happened to have a beautiful working cocker and five delightful 12 day old puppies in the vicarage.

I bit my tongue while we were there discussing wedding arrangements but the second we left I forgot all that and we got down to discussing the important business of  when I was finally allowed a dog of my own!

It was agreed that now was an excellent time and a few weeks later Meg was welcomed into our home. She came almost everywhere with me and over the next 13 months became the second most important aspect of my life. We spent about 16 hours a day together and we had so much fun. Emotionally she was like the child I do not yet have. I think most people reading this will understand that bond.

In May we got married ( it was fantastic). Meg stayed with my mother in law for our honeymoon  and I don’t mind admitting, it was hard to be parted with her for  a full 10 days.

Not long after it was time to have her neutered (or not) but we decided it was for the best, as we did not foresee it practical for her to have a litter. I always thought it such a shame though as she was so lovely.
I am not sure why but I was nervous about the procedure from the start. I rang the vet to arrange it whilst we were in the park on a walk. The minute I got off the phone I felt sick. Meg loved people, all except that is for the vet. It stemmed from having the kennel cough vaccination which goes up the nose, and from that day she was not at all happy being there.

I knew it was not going to be easy so I arranged for Meg to be seen to first. I held her whilst the pre op was administered and as it did not seem to have much effect I held her while the main anaesthetic was given. Meg went to sleep and I went about my business.

About 50 minutes later I received the call we all dread.

My beautiful little girl had not made it. She had come round but had suffered a heart attack and did not pull through.

Strangely comforting was the fact that the vet and all his team were genuinely as distraught as we were. On the back of what happened he took a month off and re evaluated his masters. It was the first healthy dog he had lost in 25 years.

I do not blame him for what happened.
She was such a ‘daddys girl’ I think she came round saw what she perceived to be a threat and panicked. The vet said that this was too much of an easy excuse for him, and would not accept that explanation but I knew her better than anyone.

I miss her soooooooooooooo much. I have her ashes in the kitchen and often talk to her.

A few weeks ago I was in tears over my Meg but remembering the reasons I got a dog in the first place I contacted a breeder expecting to be on a long waiting list but was surprised to find that they had had a litter only a week before we agreed to go and visit them.

The whole litter was lovely, the mother was lovely and the people were lovely so We have a new friend arriving on Saturday

It is very exciting, scary and also very sad

None of you have met me or Meg before ( except top barks whilst we were in York one day) But the advice on here was very useful relating to Meg and I am sure it will continue to be with our new friend

I have been reading posts on here for almost 16 months but have never actually posted so thanks to all of you who have unknowingly given advice, and thanks to those of you who will undoubtedly do so in the future .

Spare a thought for Meg. She was lovely.

All the best
Dave

So sorry for you to have lost Meg in such an awfully sudden way, I can understand your heart break, I don't know if you believe but I believe she is waiting at the rainbow bridge. Glad though that it hasn't put you off for life (very nearly did for me) and that your home will soon be full of that wonderful Cocker energy once again. Welcome to COL

H Dave

I am so sorry to hear you lost Meg, especially in that way and so young. It is heartbreaking to lose them at anytime :'(

If you've been reading posts for all that time now, you probably know about my Harmy and that I brought home a new bundle not long after Harmy died. For me, iit was the only way to get through it and Aidee has been my little saviour.  :luv:

So good luck with your new puppy. I hope the pup will help heal the hurt for you, just like Aidee did for me ;)

welcome Dave, and welcome Meg...she is obviously a huge part of your life and has given you many gifts, not least a wonderful love for cockers.

She will also know that you are not replacing her this weekend with your new arrival, but continuing that bond between dog and man that she worked so had to build.

I hope you have many many years of happiness with your new arrival.  Looking forward to your photo's and updates  :D

Oh so sad I can hardly see for tears, you make the right decisions for your pets and accidents happen. I am sure whilst you will not forget Meg you will have great fun and comfort with the new pup.

Keep us posted with pup, pictures and how you are.

Good luck

I can only echo the sentiments of all the previous posts :'(
But so glad you are welcoming a new little of bundle of mischief into your heart and home. It sounds like Meg had a truly wonderful life in her short time here, and those qualities you can now give to your new friend :luv:
Take care, and welcome to COL :D

Hi Dave - like the others I have a lump in my throat after reading this  :'(.  I think for many of us our little boy/girl have a place in our hearts just as would a child and to lose Meg so young...life really does not make alot of sense sometimes and is so unfair.

But you now have another bundle of joy coming your way and Im sure Meg will be watching over you both.  Welcome to COL...and looking forward to your 'baby' photos.

Take care

Kel and Fenn

Hi Dave and welcome.Your story moved me to tears. We lost our yellow labrador in feb but she was 13 and had been really showing her age.We were devasted(and still are) but you expect these things when they reach old age.what happened to you was so unexpected and must have been such a shock.Good luck with your new addition.I found having another really helped me.We picked up our Tess(black and white cocker) just 2 weeks after our loss and she lifted everyones spirits as soon as she walked through the door.we then started to remember all the good times in stead of dwelling on how much we missed Bess.
When my girl had to be put to sleep (she developed leukemia) i was so distraught that i actually said that i wanted to rehome all my dogs as i couldnt bear to watch them go too.I really would rather see them go to new homes then when they were fit and healthy.Drastic i know but grief does funny things to you...any way our vet turned to me and said IT IS BETTER TO HAVE LOVED AND LOST THAN NEVER TO HAVE LOVED AT ALL.   those few words meant an awful lot and brought me to my senses.
cant wait to see some pics of your new addition.

Hi and welcome

I lost my 8yr old cocker Piper so suddenly in August - took poorly at 2.30am and died at 9.50am, it was such a shock and I was distraught.

We got my new pup Hamish 2 weeks ago and he is such a little darling. Although he has not taken the place of my poor Piper, he has helped heal the wounds and been able to offer my children a bit of hope at such an awful time.

Glad you have a new addition, can't wait to see pictures

This is one of those posts that affect me for hours after reading them. What a horrible and sad story. I so feel for you. The comforting thing about COL is that you will find people here that actually understand how much one can love, and grieve for, a dog - or any pet, for that matter.

I am sure your new pup will give you a lot of new happiness and fun. I already look forward to hearing your stories and seeing some pics in the future!

Hi Dave

Welcome to COL and I'm so sorry that your first posting is so sad.  I can only say how sorry I am to hear of such a dreadful thing to happen to Meg.  I agree, we should all treasure each and every day with our little bundles of fluff.

I hope you will keep in touch with us from now on and let's hope in the future we hear from you with much happier stories.

God bless

Kay

Hi and welcome to COL :D. Glad you have come to join in.

Another one here with a lump in my throat and leaky eyes. I think we have all put ourselves in your place when reading about Meg. Cockers are so adept at getting under your skin, losing them at any age is like having an arm ripped off. To lose Meg so suddenly at such a young age is simply tragic, but they are only lent to us anyway, we never know how long for. Run free at the bridge Meg.

Speaking from experience, the Meg shaped hole in your heart will have it's sharp edges softened by your new arrival. Now you're properly here, you're going to have to post pictures as soon as.... ;)

Aw what a sad post but with such a lovely photo from Dave.  Adorable puppy and the photo made my heart melt.

So sorry about Meg you sounded like you both adored one another.

I hope your new puppy brings alot of joy and comfort to you.  Have you thought of a name yet?
Title: Re: Make the most of now
Post by: Meganmaid on September 26, 2007, 06:49:29 PM
Sorry! brains not in gear at the mo.
She is a working cocker and is chocolate rather than liver, though I believe that may be open to debate. Meg was liver and white and the brown is definatley more of a chocolate on this one.

The only name we are thinking of is sophie but we would welcome any suggestions.
Dave

Aw! Dave now you 've gone and made a load of grown women cry!! :005:  We is a right bunch of softies!!  :shades:  As a new cocker owner.. I can 't believe how SMITTEN ;)  iv become...even the silly baby voice!!!  So everyone has felt so touched at your loss!! Hey..but wiping those tears aside...that picture of you both sums it up! There seems to be a glint of knowing trust in that pups eyes...You have obviously got a lot of love to give her...when the sadness fades you will remember the good times...and cherish even more the bond you will have with her!!
As for names ..you know what..we love thinking of names...give us the description and put a post up.. and you will have more suggestions than you know what to do with!! I like to name my family after songs! So this time my choccie girl got named ruby altho her official is choc ice! Choc bar names are good of course....wispa...crunchie...  iyswim               wishing you much joy with your little sweetheart...let us know how you get on!!!

Oh Dave,
I think all of us who have loved or love a dog can appreciate how you must be feeling.
I have a Golden Working Cocker called Mily. She's 17 weeks and somehow has managed to get right into my heart. We also have a Border Terrier called Scamp. He's five and I love him to bits. But, what is it about Cockers? Mily somehow has made me feel such deep love for her. She's so pretty but a gorgeous personality too. She's mischevious and knows how to use her femenine ways to make us completely besotted!
I know this may seem nothing to do with your post, but I had a horse called Bess. She was the love of my life and gave me so much confidence. I had her for six short but wonderful months, then had to have her put to sleep. I was devastated. On the day we said goodbye, I plaited her tail and put pink carnations in it meaning 'I'll never forget you' and red roses for 'I love you'. She was put to sleep by injection and passed away lying amongst the buttercups and daisies. She has been dead for two years and I still miss her so much.
I now have another horse whom I love deeply, but she will never replace Bess or make me forget her.
You will feel the same about Meg. You will love your new puppy to bits and hopefully have an equally good relationship with her/him. But, at least you have your memories of Meg in your heart, as I do Bess, and they can never be taken from you. I am just thankful that I had Bess as she was so wonderful.
Enjoy your new Puppy.

Oh, she is just beautiful. She looks like she is already looking at you saying 'What next Dad, what we doing?"

I think Sophie is a lovely name, suits her well. If you like the kind of 'human' names how about;
Lilly, Betty, Bonnie, Lucy, Polly, Millie, Tilly, Poppy, Penny, Ella (which is 'come to me' in Greek), Saffy, Tara, Bella, Izzy, Mable, Maive, Evie etc etc
Or my personal faves; Norma-Jean and Julie Andrews   :D

We have most of us, lost much loved dogs at some time, not many so young I know, but we all know what you have gone through.

Glad to see you are on the right road now, the new girl will soon repair much of the damage and heartache for you!

How about Chloe - always think that has a chocolate-y sound about it!
