Title: Twitching jaw?
Post by: larinda on February 08, 2004, 04:38:55 PM
Hi all...Charlie is about 10 months old and lately we've noticed that his lower jaw opens and shuts quickly for about 5 seconds or so...like it's twitching.  He stops and is fine...any idea what might be going on? :?:

Hi Larinda and Charlie,

Millie sometimes does this too - usually after a vigourous bout of toy chewing or tug of war with her rope.
It doesn't seem to bother her and like with Charlie it only lasts a couple of seconds.

I put it down to a 'cramp' like effect after biting down so hard for so long.

Hope that helps relieve you a little :)

Sometimes smells can actually make a dog do this.
Especially when a stud dog gets a whiff of a bitch in season.

I agree with Kim on this one. My old dog used to do this if he'd been sniffing whilst out on a walk and caught the scent of a bitch   Wasn't the first time I caught him licking wee either    :?
Horses also do this, but they tend to do it with their top lips  :)
