Thank you so much everyone.  We did have a 9yr old golden girl called Tilly.  We were devastated to lose her to cancer a few weeks ago. It was such a great shock to us.  We were going to wait a few months and have another puppy, but spotted Emily for sale very near us, and couldn't resist.  She won't replace Tilly in our hearts at all, but she is making it easier to cope.  Does anyone think that Emily seems very small for 8 weeks?  I have looked at other puppies and she doesn't seem as stocky or her ears as long? I'll pop some more pics on in a min.

Hi Annette,

I did see Emily's mum, she was a solid black, and I was told her dad was golden.  She just looks a little different to me from our other dog when she was a puppy and I wish I'd asked to see a pic of her dad now.  I bought her without papers, as I only wanted her as a pet, so I hope she is a full cocker.

Hi and welcome from me and the boys Jasper and Louie and our little golden girl Heidi who is nearly 16 weeks.

Emily looks very like Heidi, she's a dot but looks about the right size.  You forget how little they are - this was Heidi with the boys aged 12/13 weeks

Heidi looks adorable, she looks very much like Tilly our other dog.  I think I'm panicking a bit because emily doesn't have papers, and I didn't see her dad.  By the way, I only live 2 miles from the Lickeys where you are walking today.  Woukd have loved to joined in, and will definitely come next time.

We quite often have mini meets around so when you are ready just let me know, we don't always post as it tends to be a few of us locally who get together - there are a few of us around Kidderminster and Stourport.  Whereabouts are you?  You can always came for a walk even if Emily is too 'ickle yet  ;)

Puppies can change so much over the coming weeks...... I know of someone who adopted what was described as a Pomeranian Cross from a pound and it turned out to be a German Shepherd!!!  :lol2: :lol2:

Is she a show type or a worker?

I don't know the difference between show and cocker (sorry to be thick!)  i just thought working cockers meant that they were used as working dogs!  How can I telll which she is?  Thank you for the lovely welcome I've had, I feel an addiction coming on!!  I had a look at Alfie's youtube video, it6 was great.  Where did you get that fab bed?

If you do a search you'll find the difference between worker and show types, we had a mixture of each on todays walk, photos to follow on the meet thread when I can upload them, there is quite a marked difference in appearance and often in the way they behave.

I thought your pup looked a bit worker-like. Although she's not got papers, could you ask her breeder what lines she is from? He/She should know whether she's working or show type (or a mix of the two). Whatever she is, she's lovely  :luv: She looks tiny, but when I look back at photos of my two at that age, they look just as small.  :luv:

Here is Roxy, when she was about 10weeks:

and at 8 weeks:

and this is Rio at about 10 weeks:

Both working type cockers.

I think you are right. Looking a pics of Heidi (who is the image of our old dog) and Roxy who looks very like Emily, I am convinced she has worker in her.  Her mum was definitely a show cocker, I have called the breeder today to see if he can send a pic of his daughter's dog who is the father, but can't get through yet.  Thanks for all the advice, I had no idea there were two types, but I knew she looked different to what I expected.
Glad you had a good time at Lickeys.  The weather was perfect for you.
By the way, how do I put a pic up as an avatar?

Hopefully the breeder will be able to tell you whether or not her sire was a worker or show type.

If you have a search on differences between show types and workers you will see lots of pics of grown up workers to grown up show types and also read about their general traits (physical and mental), there can be significant differences in required levels of activity (both mental and physical stimulation) between the 2.

Regardless of whether she is show or worker though she is absolutely gorgeous  :luv: :luv:

If she gets too much please feel free to post her to me  ;)  :005:

Hi Caroline,
I did do a search and I must admit I'm slightly worried now.  Firstly the working cocker seems to need  very high excercise and stimulation, and secondly the grown up dogs look very different to the show cockers.  The show cockers all look very similar apart from colour but the workers seem to have lots of different "looks" maybe it has to do with breeding, eg part worker part show? as to what they turn out like. Google searching showed a wide variety of looks and colours.
Title: Re: Hi to everyone
Post by: CarolineL on February 17, 2008, 06:12:29 PM
don't be worried  ;)

they don't look the same as show cockers but I think personality wise they are mostly very similar (very sooky/soppy, happy go lucky characters)

There are also workers out there who dont need as much stimulation as some shows - mostly it is down to the breeding. If her mother was a show type and sire a worker then she'll still be a mixture and TBH she could take the behavioural characteristics of the show and the looks of the worker - the thing is with mixed breeds - regardless of if they are within the same breed if you see what I mean, you never know what characteristics you're gonna get  ;)

Your first port of call should really be to speak to the breeder and find out what you've got!!!  ;) and take it from there

Don't be worried. I have two working cockers both of which look very different and have very different energy levels from each other but both are adorable as are all the other workers Ive met  ;)

Hi again,
Well I got in touch with the breeder who said that her sire and dam were both show cockers!!  One golden one black.  I'm quite surprised cos I was sure she was part worker.  I'll have to wait and see how she grows.  Her ears are definitely shorter than most cocker puppies.  Thanks so much for all the comments though, everyone has been so welcoming. :D

Hi and welcome to COL  :D

I have 3 working cockers, tbh your wee girl does look at least part worker to me but it can be hard to tell with young puppies. Can you ask the breeder to send you a copy of her pedigree? You should be able to tell from that.

She's very cute though  :luv:  and I'm sorry to hear about your other girl passing away.

Our vet told us that as long as our pup was where other vaccinated dogs had been it would be ok. We also carried Hurley EVERYWHERE - it was a key part of our socialisation.

Do you have Gwen Bailey's Perfect Puppy book?? There is a check list at the back which you can mark off when you have done all the key aspects of socialisation

Hi Caroline,
Yes I have Gwen's book. It's very helpful.  I know I'm full of questions but does anyone have any idea what sort of food she should have.  When I had her she had diarrhoea, then it settled and now it's back with a bit of blood in it.  She has scrambled egg in the morning, half pack pedigree puppy sachet at 12 the other half at 4, and weetabix before bed.  thanks so much for all the advice, it's so helpful to find out thinkgs like this. :D

Hello to you and Emily-mae

She's a little cracker  :luv:
There are a few of us in a similar situation to you. I lost Groove on the 3rd Jan this year and I now have Eric. He's 15 weeks old now and like you he is really helping to fill the void that Groove left in my life.
Keep enjoying the site and I wish you and Emily-mae a long , happy and healthy life together.

She's gorgeous.

I also thought she might be part working type. Not that it matters in the least.

Our Buddy is 1/4 worker. Here is a photo of him with his mother who is 1/2 worker (Buddy is the blue roan on the right). Bramble was pulling a bit of a face there, but she is beautiful really.

All questions are good - we all have to start somewhere - you only have to take a look at my first posts to see how much I needed to learn!

When we got Hurley he was fed scrambled egg and pedigree complete kibble for brekkie, same kibble for lunch then rice pudding for dinner  :lol2: It soon changed to P@H Wainwrights own brand kibble- however he is now fed BARF (bones and raw food). He was started on BARF at about 6 months and we haven't looked back.

Behaviour can be linked to poor quality foods which although expensive don't have the best ingredients, I liken it to feeding a child MacDonalds for every meal. Burns is an ethically produced dry food, or you can look at James Wellbeloved, Arden Grange, Wainwrights - I think what sets them above the rest is that they have a higher protein content. Dogs dont need cereals or vast amounts of carbs to survive and foods with a higher protein level as the above have, are better for them.

BARF is definately down to the individual but my dog will not eat kibble at all, and with the high quality wet foods like Natures Menu and Naturediet his poohs were ENORMOUS and he had terrible wind. If you do a search on BARF you will find many a thread on it.

Hi to you yes she does look like she has some worker in her :luv:
but dont worry :shades:
Bailey has some worker in him some where on his fathers side but he is 90% show type
and he is adorable but lacking in his coat a bit not the ears though, his breeder said that is the problem if somewhere a long
the line in the pedegree there is some worker in it can show in the coat.
my friends have workers and people always think they are small springers especialy if we out walking with my working springer minstrel
but whatever I am sure you will love your little one, bailey was bought after our other springer Cadbury died.

Hi again Caroline,
Thanks for that.  I've not heard of Kibble, but I might give that a try.  I'm thinking of cutting the meat completely tomorrow to see how she gets on, and just giving milky foods.  Then if that doesn't help reverse it and cut out the milk instead.

Thanks Ann Annette and Emma or your comments.  It's strangely comforting to know that other people have been through the same things with their pets.  It's amazing the void they leave when gone.  I think you are right too about Emily having worker somewhere in her line even if it's not her parents.  Your dogs look gorgeous to me so I don't think I need worry!

Louie, the blue roan in the pic with Heidi, is similar mix to Annette's Buddy, 1/4 worker.  He has a shortish coat but the ears of a show type. His mum was very workerish except her ears. She was a gold too  ;)

Louie likes to work the ground constantly when out, but he's just as cuddly and loving at home as the other two. I probably wouldn't want to miss too many walks with him though, where Jasper would be OK not going out for a day or two, I think Lou would find it hard.

This isn't a fantastic pic, but it's show type Heidi next to worker Rio (Holly's) taken today, there is only about 3 weeks difference in age, but already a big difference in shape etc
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i180/jaspersmum/68457a01.jpg

NB, show type = down and dirty, petite worker wouldn't go in the mud and get her feet dirty ::)

What a gorgeous pic :D. Emily definitely looks more like Rio and the pic that was put up of Roxy.  but she can't be a full worker if her mum and dad were show types surely?  Do you think she could be a throw back?  Or maybe change as she gets older.  I feel a bit flummoxed as now I have no idea what she'll look like when she's grown!

She will be gorgeous  :luv: , are you able to get her pedigree? that would show SH CH or FT CH to give you a better idea, even if not KC reg, if you are lucky, someone might be able to trace if there is a kennel name  :-\

Here's Lou's mum, she was 1/2 & 1/2 although I haven't much info o type on her mum's one side as they look like commercial/puppy farm

Ellie is absolutely beautiful.  I think she looks more like a show type to me.  Very similar to our old dog Tilly.  Emily's ears are slightly shorter so she may have worker in her genes somewhere, although we have been told by breeder she has both show parents.  She has been ill recently with bad diarrhoea but is well now and extremely lively!!
