Title: sad sad day
Post by: tiamaria on April 28, 2008, 07:31:15 PM
I write this with the sorest of eyes and the heaviest of hearts, Charley was taken to the vets earlier with a compression on his spine, my partner was playing with him, he got giddy and was running around silly and banged into the kitchen cupboard, we thought nothing of it until he went all disorientated, we rushed him to the vets and the outcome isnt good at all.  The vet is keeping him overnight, but she doesnt think he will make it.

Im writing this to all you puppy owners, because i know how frustrating it can be. Cherish every moment (even the midnight wake up cries and the wet floors) because you never know whats around the corner.  And do wrap them in cotton wool and love them and kiss them at any opportunity.  :'(

Thank you.  :luv:

I just cant believe how a little skid across the kitchen floor and a bang into the cupboard could have done so much damage? My partner is beside himself, he really blames himself - i feel so bad for him and so angry at the same time (i know i shouldnt) The vet is giving us a ring at 9 tonight to let us know if hes picked up any.   :'(

Fingers crossed it's better news when the vet rings. Puppies can be seriously injured of course they can - but they do also bounce very well so don't give up hope.

Lots of healing thoughts for your puppy.  Your OH shouldn't blame himself - it's natural to play with puppies and this must have been a tragic freak accident.  ((hugs)) to you too.  I have everything crossed for good news.

Thank you all so very much - i needed to speak to someone, but know i couldn't, haven't told anyone yet because i seem to have lost my ability to speak - so i thought the next best thing was to come on here.  I cant believe how much this little dog has got into my heart in such a short space of time!  Hes been to Scarborough all weekend in a caravan with us - he was so clever and good all weekend! And he mastered the SIT command like he knew it before he came (his mum must have already taught it him ) True one in a million he is!  I will of course let you all know! And again thank you  :luv:

Oh, I am so, so sorry this has happened.

Please don't blame yourselves, it sounds like it was just a freak accident. But I really do understand how you are feeling.

Hoping and praying that the news will be better than you hoped.

Have they x-rayed him? Where in the spine does your vet think the injury is?

She thought he might have just been concussed when we explained that he was just playing with my partner - but wanted to xray him to be sure.  It looked like it was just below his shoulder blades on the xray, because i remember her pointing out where his shoulder blades where.

I hope he is ok.  It is so hard not to blame yourself when this happens, that is natural. This happened to us with our 6 year old cocker, the garden gate sprung back on him.  It is such a horrible thing to see.  I remember sobbing, shouting etc etc.  It is horrible. You never know, with cage rest, some anti inflams it may settle.  They are such crazy bouncy dogs, this is more common than you think.  I hope for you they can do something. But I understand what a sad worrying time this is.  Fingers crossed.

I really really hope so, but he looked dreadful after the xray! The thing is he really started to pick things up over the last few days, you know going to the back door for a poop, picking up the sit command, i really felt all the hard work was paying off, and knew i was really bonding with him and that the future of him and us was bright! I am so upset and cant imagine not having him and his uncontrollable bladder around.

Thank you all so much for your kind words.  Heres hoping he will pull through for us.  :luv: :luv: :luv:

Hes a lot better!  :D  Hes had steroids last night, and she said hes been walking around this morning.  Shes concerned with his neck because of his xray, but wants to see how he goes over the next week.  She thinks he may have had extreme concussion.  But is happy with the progress hes made so far.  I have to go in at 11 this morning and hopefully bring him home, where hes to have no play just calm trotts around the house etc.  Im so pleased, but anxious in case there is any underlying damage.

Yeah it is really good news, hopefully a lot of rest and tlc and he'l be back to his old self (even though iv aged 10 years overnight).  Looks like its back to being housebound for us for a while, she wants us to get him a harness so there is no pressure on his neck.  Sorry about the delay, i had the woman next door asking this morning, and my partner phoning from work, then i had to go round to school and explain why my son was a little late for school (he wanted to see if charley was ok before he went)

And I just want to say a big thank you to everyone for their concern, it really did help me a lot last night, and im sure all them prayers and thoughts have gone a long way to helping Charley through. I will keep you all informed with his progress, and i will let you know how i get on with him when i go to the vets later.   :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv:

Such fantastic news. I am so pleased.

Don't worry too much about him falling out with you. I don't think that will happen. Cockers are just love monsters. He's just a bit traumatised by last night, the injury itself and staying at the vets etc.

Do you have a crate so you can keep him safe when you aren't able to watch him?

I dont know quite how to say this, but charley collapsed again this afternoon.  Iv rushed him to the vets, and the vet has had a proper look at him and thinks he has a problem with his brain.  He says it is on his right side.  To be honest in my panic again i didnt listen to what he was saying completely but i did sign an anesthetic form, so i believe he may have another xray, but he doesnt think it is anything to do with his neck or spine.  I cant believe this has happened again, i was just on my way to pick my son up from school, alone in the house with no transport as my partner was at work. Total panic my neighbour run me up there.  The vet suggested i phone the breeder to ask whether shed had any other trouble from the rest of the litter - i must say iv phoned but no answer again, i tried ringing her the first week we got him to tell her he was ok and settling in fine and got no answer then.  Am i being suspicious or not??

Anyway the vet is phoning me at 6.30 to let me know how he is.  :'(

I have news - i dont know if its good or bad to be honest?  The vet let us go for him tonight, he said he recovered in about 2 hours, he says it is his right side that he seems to loose control over.  And charley has been sick both times, and the vet says its like motion sickness, so his little head must be all dizzy when it happens. He seems to think it is some kind of brain infection, and maybe when he ran into the kitchen cupboard and taken ill monday was just a coincidence or possibly something that was always there and the slight knock brought it on sooner.  Anyway hes given us steroids and antibiotics to give him, he wants him to have them for 4 weeks to see if they make any difference, and review it from there.  He says if he has another episode before we go back to the vets next tuesday not to rush straight to the vets, but get him comfy and just let him come round by himself - which i am absolutely dreading as it breaks my heart.  But Charley is home, and again to look at him you wouldnt think there was anything wrong with him. Apart from the extreme hunger and thirst.  Iv just put him in his crate and hes gone fast asleep no trouble.  No doubt he'l have me up needing a wee soon, so it looks like im spending the rest of the week on the settee? I dont mind i want to be within earshot of him!

Thanks for all your concern and if anyone has ever heard of this condition if they can give me any advice that would help me rest a little i would really appreciate it.

Yes thats what he called it. He mentioned head scans, but doesnt want to go down that route yet because of the expense! But that is exactly what it is, symptom wise! Oh thank you for that, fingers crossed we can get it sorted without too much suffering to charley. Poor him!  Maybe the bang did cause it then after all  :'( :'(

To think of it i asked the vet about his ears on his 2nd injection because id noticed he tilted his head as scratched it alot, and she told me to leave his ears and not to maul them as i risk making them worse.  Maybe it is the infection/disease in his inner ear?? I think that would be the best outcome?

No we dont have any insurance, weve paid £200 so far.  Im annoyed with myself for not sorting it out, had the forms on the memo board for 3 weeks along with my hoover guarantee that i still havnt posted.

This link above that someone on here gave me yesterday describes his symptoms exactly. Seems so severe for an ear infection, but hopefully it is his ear and the medication will clear it up and we can all go back to normality? Iv been watching him like a hawk this morning and im still not showered or dressed  ::) my partner says i need to stop it im making myself paranoid by watching his every move, and i know hes right, im just scared his going to collapse again and hurt himself in the process.

I gave him some sardines last night, and he certainly does like them, im sure i seen him wink at the cat while licking his lips  :005:

I think the vestibular syndrome described in the link sounds very similar to what is labarynthitis in humans (I've had this twice, and the first time I could even walk down the stairs safely!!!).  Whether or not they're identical, I don't know, but it is certainly the same kind of thing.

Hopefully, as Charley is "only" getting this occassionally and not constantly, then it could be more likely to be something treatable causing it, such as an infection or inflammation.  I hope your vet manages to get to the bottom of whatever is causing it!!!  :-*

I wouldn't have thought banging into the cupboard would have caused the kind of head trauma that the article was talking about - the examples they gave are being in a car accident or of big fall - so don't start feeling that you (or your OH) have caused this in any way.  It may have been a trigger, but I very much doubt this would be a cause.  :-*

Hes constantly banging into things, hes just banged his head jumping up to me on the kitchen chair  >:( I dont know how i can protect him any more than i am doing? We've banned tugging and running about, and we havnt taken him out at all today just incase. I cant think of anything what brings it on? Or whether it was the medication from Monday night wearing off?
But i must say on a happier note we're slightly relieved that we at least know what is causing it.  My partner had a bad ear infection last year and he said it is just awful, and says he totally sympathises with our Charley chops!  :luv: :luv:

Is he up to doing training?  Just thinking that this might help tire him out and make him less likely to go looking for trouble!!!   :luv:
The medication wearing off may be having an impact - some medicines do stay in the system for a very long time.

Im going to have a look through his papers in a minute and see what iv got with him.  You know hes been scratching his ear all day - im annoyed that the vet fobbed me off when i told her about his ear 2 weeks ago, maybe if shed taken any notice charley and us wouldnt be going through this and be over £200 lighter in the pocket.

Just an update on Charley, weve been back to the vets again today.  The vet has definitely ruled out vestibular syndrome because his eyes dont flicker from side to side, they go upwards which indicate the problem is in the brain.  They said to keep him on these tables for 4 weeks to see if whatever he has corrects itself, otherwise apart from paying for a scan on his brain (no insurance) there would be little they could do for him.  Hes been fine on these tablets and its a week tomorrow since he had his funny turn.  Hopefully hel be fine once he comes off them?? Il certainly be a bag of nerves when he does.

Im pleased theres a bit of light at the tunnel, il let you all know how we go on!  :D

I don't feel that I could possibly know enough of the story from reading this thread to advise this sort of action.

Puppies can get ill, just as we all can. It doesn't necessarily mean that it could have been avoided by the breeder doing anything different, and I think you have managed to make contact with the breeder now, haven't you?

I think you should be very careful about following this bit of advice.

we have spoken to her, and what she said is posted in the thread above. Im just worried about charley at the minute, but i do feel she as a breeder has a certain amount of responsibility and me as a consumer must have certain rights somewhere, especially if it is found it is a genetic disorder that has been past from her bitch. Even if i had insurance to cover charley i still would want her to know and to take responsibility for part of it all.

But no im not an evil person or even a vindictive one and i thank everyone for all their advice and concern.
