Title: Sainsburys Insurance
Post by: Carol09 on April 11, 2011, 10:18:03 AM
Hi all,

Anyone with Sainsburys pet insurance? I have got a great quote but it says £7500 per condition.  Does anyone know if this is for life policy or not? Can't find it anywhere...

Thanks

Caroline

I'm with Sainsburys (only since Jan though).  When I recieved the policy documentation it does say the following:

"Your insurance covers your vet fees up to £7500 for each injury, or illness that ????? may need treatment for.  Your policy has no time limit on claims and does not stop paying after 12 months, if ????? needs treatment for a long term condition".

So would guess its for life.  I will be making a claim shortly and will let you know how I get on.

It would be for as long as it takes to use up £7500 for that illness/condition. That would not necessarily cover the lifetime of the illness. For example, my friend's doberman was diabetic and his treatment cost more than £7500 over the years, so under that policy she would have had to pay all of the vet bills.

Hmmm, that's what I am worried about. I could still read it as £7500 per condition and when that's used up then that's it.  We'll see what Sains has to say.

I've got Sainsbury's and without pulling out the policy I'm sure that that is correct - lifetime of illness but with a ceiling of £7,500.

I have been very pleased with Sainsburys though.  they've paid out when I've claimed without hassle

I've just had my Argos Platinum insurance quote through (it's gone up to £214 from £180 with NO claims :o).

Anyway, that one states up to £7,000 PER YEAR, cover - unlimited (ie for life) and this amount is REINSTATED at each renewal (ie. yearly) subject to policy being renewed and premiums paid and up to date.  Lesley

The sainsbury's total amount is per illness/injury up to £7500 in each year, so if you have several different illness/injuries they would individually have a limit up to £7500 in each policy year, so for example two separate conditions may cumulatively give you a limit of £15k  Continue with Sainsburys as your insurer and each year you will be able to claim.  If you move insurers then obviously they won't continue to pay out.

I don't think any pet insurance policy will give an unlimited amount that you can claim in a given year.

I'm claiming for Harry's hip dysplasia & they've been fantastic, although he's only 2 so not sure how long the £7,500 will last, he's been referred for physio/hydro, I haven't sent the claim form off for that yet but so far have received cheques within 7-10 days of the vet visit

My girls are covered by Sainsburys and the premium actually went down this year.  I pay just under £24 for my 2 cockers.  :D
I looked at my policy and found this -

What is covered
We will pay you all reasonable costs for treatment of your pet by a vet up to the
following:
Option 2  £7,500 per condition
Option 1 £3,000 per condition. Each condition is only covered for the 12 months
immediately following the first date of treatment.
The above reasonable costs are including the following;
1.  The cost of treatment for any ongoing condition beyond any renewal date of the
policy, provided you have renewed the policy and premiums are paid and up to date.
2.  Up to £7,500 per condition under Option 2 or £3,000 per condition under Option 1
for the cost of dental treatment due to an injury or illness.
3.  Under Option 2 up to £1,000 per condition for complementary treatment carried
out by a vet or a complementary therapist. This cover is not applicable for Option 1.
4.  Under Option 2 up to £250 in each period of insurance for the costs of treatment
for behavioural problems carried out by a specialist under the direction of a vet.
This cover is not applicable for Option 1.
5.  Under Option 2 up to £200 per condition for the cost of a clinical diet for your pet
(for a maximum period of 4 weeks), as long as it is recommended by your vet in
order to treat a condition and is only available from your vet. In this case we will
pay the difference between the normal cost of feeding your pet and what you pay
for the diet. This cover is not applicable for Option 1.
6.  Under Option 2 up to £2,500 per condition for treatment of your pet by a vet
whilst your pet is outside the United Kingdom during a trip under the pet travel
scheme (with a maximum of three trips in any period of insurance). This cover is
not applicable for Option 1.
7.  Under Option 2 up to £100 for the cost of cremation if your pet dies or is put
to sleep by a vet as a result of injury or illness, provided such injury or illness
is covered under Section 7 – Death caused by injury or Section 8 – Death from
illness. This cover is not applicable for Option 1. Section 1 – Veterinary fees

My girls have option 2 and it does appear that ongoing conditions are covered beyond the £7,500.

My friends GSD has had numerous claims on his Sainsburys insurance and they have always paid out promptly.  He is also receiving weekly hydrotherapy sessions curtesy of Sainsburys.  :D

Thanks that's interesting.  We have been offered £11.85 for Option 2 which I thought was great. I think you would have to be realllly unlucky to have anything excessive over the amount they cover.

Jasper is with Sainsburys and they have paid out with no problems. Jasper is down as a 10 year old (the rescue aged him wrong) when he is actually about 13/14 years old and his monthly amount of now £98 a month with £125 excess or 15% which ever is greater. When I first started the policy it was about £12 a month but has risen fast in the last 5 years  :-\

I think if it were that amount I'd be starting a pension pot for them instead of the premium unless there was some ongoing problem being paid for  :-\

Well here is the reply from Sainsburys:

As per your request, I can confirm that you will have £7500 per condition, and that is to last year after year for a condition.

I still think this can mean two things, what do you think???

That insurance lasts a life time BUT there is a ceiling of £7500 that they will pay during that lifetime.

However if the dog had a different illness requiring treatment, that £7500 pot opens again for that illness providing that they don't say its connscted and therefore excluded...

I don't think you'll find many companies that offer more than £7500 anyway

Unfortunately Jasper was diagnosed with Canine Senile Dementia, Dry Eye and Bronchitis so there is no way I could afford the monthly medication costs so I have had to stay with Sainsburys. All in all, I pay about £180 a month in insurance for all 5 dogs  :o

Are they all with Sainsburys?  My 4 are not too bad as each subsequent dog has been cheaper and we had about £50 in vouchers this year for renewing.  I think when I checked the cost for a 5th recently, I was quoted £7 monthly

Nope, I had Bee first and she was placed with Lloyds TSB, then Jasper came along and put onto Sainsburys. By the time the other 3 appeared, Jasper's monthly amount was so high I decided not to keep going with them. But the last 3 are now with Axa and I have had so many problems with them that I am going to try and move the 2 that don't have any ongoing conditions!

Finally got a cheque through for Lexi's recent treatment, took 3 weeks and only last night was thinking I'll have to chase it up.  Paid in full with £100 excess knocked off so am very pleased as this is the first claim I've had to make and I was concerned because Lexi had treatment for an eye problem before.  The vet did assure me that this was completely different and thankfully Sainsburys have seen it that way too.  :D

I don't think you'll find many companies that offer more than £7500 anyway

Kennel Club now offer £10k per condition, life time cover and now the £10k is renewed each year.

That said Laney's premium has just increased to £108 per month!! That'll be the £3k surgery at Cambridge recently. Can't cancel though as she needs ongoing treatment for the cancer and her back :-( she is also 11yrs andwe have had 3 big claims and ongoing conditions over the years.

Jessica's has gone up to £78 pm however she's 12yr. Thinking about canceling as her steriods are only £5 every 2 mths but if she has another pancreatic attack then that's not cheap :-/

Otis is now £ 48pm he's now 7yrs with no big claims in the last 3 years

Thinking long and hard about sainsburys insurance when I finally get my new baby

insurance....... It's a mine field!!

whenever i insured my mini's i a;ways used sainsbury's and they were brill-cant recommend them enough. my grandparents are currently paying £99 pcm for their 12 y/o GSD and last time they tried to claim for a front tooth broken vertically down the middle more than said we must have done it on person! >:( i wouldnt like to try sticking my hands in a GSD's mouth and breaking his tooth for a laugh but luckily our vet was great and fought the case and eventually more than paid up but i wouldnt touch them with a barge pole!
