Title: new here and new to cockers
Post by: Daxigirl on October 25, 2011, 02:05:10 PM
Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say hi and what a fab forum this is!

On Friday my hubby and I and our 1 year old dachshund cooper will be going to collect our new addition to the family a 10 week old cocker bitch, she is a rescue dog and has had a few problems in her very short life :'(, she had to have her front right leg amputated as it did not grow right when she was born and she could not use it!! she is also blind!!! so as you can see she is not the typical puppy.

I'm sure I will be on here a lot asking questions for things, wish us luck as I'm sure at first we will have a difficult time getting her settled and finding her way around our house (I'm sure cooper the daxi will help her) but she needs us and we will provide a loving home for her.

Thank you everyone for the kind welcomes.

Yes come Friday we will be Melissa's new mum and dad lol, she pulled on our hart strings as soon as we seen her but tbh we were not looking for a cocker we were looking for a springer as we lost our springer last November and she was such an amazing dog.

We had been looking for the right dog for a while as cooper the daxi loves other dogs and I think having another dog in the house will be good for him, as soon as we saw her we knew she was the one for us!

I will put some photos on when we get her home with us.

A massive welcome to you, Melissa and Cooper.  It's always a pleasure to read that someone has rehomed a shelter pet.  It's an even greater pleasure when that pet has a greater need of a loving, patient home.  Well done.  I'm sure the love you give her will help her to adjust very quickly.  Really looking forward to hearing how she's getting on and piccies too.

Welcome! So pleased to hear that this lovely little girl is getting such a wonderful home. Sending you all good wishes for a happy homecoming on Friday. My name is Mandy and I'm mummy to two beautiful cockers - Dylan a chocolate boy who is 21 months and Daisy a black and tan (with white) girl of seven months. In fact, facially, Daisy is quite similar to your Cooper!

Looking forward to hearing all about Chloe's progress on this forum.

Im so excited for you and im soooo excited at seeing photos of her settling in
What a gorgeous lucky little cocker she is  :luv:

There are many owners on the forum with blind cockers that will be able to give you lots of tips and advice - I had medical issues with diesel the first month i had him and found this site to be my backbone ... It has been a dog send for me and diesel and i have met some wonderful people  :005:

We are all very friendly (and nosy hehe) and no questions are seen as silly question as most of us have experienced any issues so batter right in with question and photo overloads  :005:  :luv:

Will be looking out for your posts Nicola -  :luv:

OOh How exciting little Chloe will be staying on the forum!!  Your daxi is gorgeous  :luv: like a mini version of my black and tan long coated german shepherd! looking forward to seeing how little Chloe progresses,  I think the best advice for having a blind dog is treat them like any other dog,  don't see it as a disability.  I know some people with blind dogs (or parcially sited) use coats with 'Im blind' printed on them so people are aware they are blind so they don't startle them by touching them.

All the best for friday, Im sure your very excited!!

Sorry my reply is so late Nicola - typed one out last night which vanished for some reason  :-\  :lol2:
In ref to you question abut Tinker .... absolutely brilliantly & the most common comment we have about her, either in the home or out is 'she's not really blind is she? because to see her from afar, running about like a march hare, she looks just like any other sighted cocker  :luv:
The main bit of advice is (& I'm sure you know this already  ;) ) let her be the dog she is going to be & try not to mother her too much (I mean this in the kindest of ways & know it is easier said than done ) We got a behaviourist in when Tinker was 10 months old to help with advice (Oh how I wish I'd found COL back then  :'( ) some of the more positive advice we got was that I was mothering her too much & had to toughen up & not feel too sorry for her - look & build on her strengths & try not to be over caring to her weaknesses. You won't be able to control loving her in a very exceptional way but she has to be encouraged to become a happy confident little girl & it sounds like Cooper could be the perfect companion to do this for her along with you too  :luv:
I have bells on my keys when out, which she follows along as they jingle (but do use the whistle for my other girls & Tinker will come to that too, so may be a idea for Chloe  ;) )
'go steady' is the phrase we use when she needs to be careful i.e on stairs, uneven ground, edge of rivers, tree in her path  :005: - it seemed to of worked really well for us & she responds to it instantly.
not moving furniture & 'showing' her any changes that occur in the home but you'll be amazed at how quickly she memorises her surroundings.
She will be using all her other senses in a way you won't even think about & at times her unique ability will take your breath away  (i.e Tinker at a very young age would charge through the kitchen & out the back door- I never understood how she knew it was open but behaviourist explain she could feel the breeze/change in temp & knew it was open ....how wonderful is that  )
She may get more tired that an 'average' cocker - her brain is working far more harder mentally, just to do everyday things that sighted dogs don't even think about & we found Tinker to be a little 'nocturnal' in the early years & potter around a fair bit at night - I don't know if that was just her or because with no 'light & dark' we had to wait for her routine to latch on to ours  :005: :luv:
Getting her used to being handled - especially her eyes etc being looked at, will be quite important (especially if she requires drops etc)  we found sitting Tinker on a chair/bar stool (with a helper & a tube of primula cheese spread or similar  ;) :005: )  she would sit really well for ear/eye care & it's never been a problem.

sorry this is turning into an essay - there is so much more i could say  ph34r... but think you might need a tea break  :lol2:  - if you want anymore help give us a shout & I'll be more than happy to help - there are many more people on here with sight impaired doglets & I'm sure they'll be along soon with more marvelous tips  :luv:

Lindsy,

Thank you so so much for all that amazing advice you have talked about things I never would have known about!
A fab idea about putting bells on my keys when out as that was one area I was quite worried about so it's going to help so much when Chloe comes home.

I'm sure over time you will get fed up with all the questions I will have lol, thank you once again and I just have to say that Tinker is BEAUTIFUL!!!

Sad news everyone I spoke to Chloe's foster mum last night and she thinks that poor Chloe has the onset of kennel cough :'(
She has been a touch wheezy and coughing for the last 2 days so there is going to be a bit of a hold up before she comes home, she needs to get a little better and also have her second vax, she should be coming sometime next week all being well.

Please send all your get well soon vibes to Chloe
