over excited puppy meeting people
« on: October 08, 2013, 01:17:25 PM »
Hi, i decided to put a message on here to help anyone with an over excited puppy who goes mental every time it meets someone and other dogs in the street. my five month old loves attention. she goes mental everytime we meet people in the street and jumps up at them and wants a fuss. now some of us out there love a cocker puppys attention but it does become a problem with people that dont like dogs or are nervous around them or perhaps just doesnt like a cute puppy jumping up at them. I have for a long time tried to get brandy to sit with other people want to say hello, however she doesnt seem to calm down much. so last couple of weeks i have been taking her down to my sons lower school to meet him out and meet his friends. brandy loves children, and at first it took all my strength to stop her going absolutely mental and jumping on all of them. however gradually she has got better and is calmer already. also everyone who wants to fuss her i have asked if they tell her to sit before. this is really working well, she still wants fuss but has started to sit a bit calmer now and i sure after  a while will do it really well. i just wanted people on here to read this from someone who is totally new at training a dog. there is loads of brilliant help on here from lots of people but sometimes its hard what advice to take. i found that socialising brandy by meeting lots of people down at the school is really helping her plus tiring her out for a few hours.x

Thanks for that - I've been battling with the same sort of over-excitement  from Ozzy for the last year and a bit!  I'm certainly going to try the 'sit' method before he has a chance to leap all over someone!  Might even try it when we spot other dogs coming towards us - he goes mental then as well and just starts leaping all over the place on the end of the lead. >:D  When there are no people or other dogs in sight he walks quite well on a loose lead.

brandy is the same. think its mainly a cocker thing so people say. the more people tell her to sit before they fuss her the better i think, although she still gets over excited with other dogs, but getting better with people x x
