WCS Puppy Mia - Questions about exercise
« on: August 18, 2021, 12:36:45 PM »
Hello  :D  I am a first time pet parent to Mia (3 months, 10 days old). She came to us when she was 12 weeks and her second vaccination is next week. So, we can't take her on walks which is a shame. I usually do training, tug of war, snuffle matt as exercise and play time for her at home and she goes out to the garden for sniffing and general running around. And then I encourage her to nap in between these sessions. However, I am worried that I am not exercising/mentally stimulating her enough since she never really wants to sleep. But when she doesn't, she gets very nippy and stops listening to even the simplest commands from us. How do you keep your puppy entertained and do you follow a play/rest schedule for your puppy? I am quite stressed about not doing enough for her so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can do some basic obedience work with Mia whilst waiting for her to be fully vaccinated.  Does she retrieve? That will make life a lot easier if she does.  Have a look at the BG application which has been created by Ben Randall of Beggarbush Gundogs.  Its an online training tool with lots of useful information on training your dog from pup to field.  The latter may not be of interest to you but you’ll have a well behaved, controllable dog if you follow the guidance.  As a by product, Mia will be mentally tired from the training.

You can take her out and about, just don't put her on the ground. It's vital that she gets some socialisation at this age and gets used to seeing traffic, other people, dogs, bikes, etc etc. There is a short window for pups to learn this sort of thing, so sooner the better. I took my pup into town with me, into shops, pubs, cafes etc - she turned into a very sociable and confident dog.  :luv:  If you have a small rucksack, just wear it on your front, put a towel in the bottom and pop her in it. Seeing new things will tire her out and doing some training, games etc will too.

If she's getting nippy, she's probably over tired. You need to enforce naps - put her in a crate or quiet spot, so she has nothing to do and will nap - they will never stop if there is something going on!  :005:
