Firstly, I apologise for my complete ignorance on dogs, first time for me

What is a roan (don't laugh), told you I know little of dogs, only ever had cats.  Sally is solid orange colour.

Sally would be classed as a solid gold. Have a look at this article on cocker colours - hopefully that should clear things up for you
