Thanks Jane - phew, I didn't fancy having to carry my own (not so) little heffalump whilst also trying to hold Jimmy and Mistys leads at the same time.

As for the steps to the garden you mentioned I can't see any nasty accidents happening there

Don't bank on it ;) I heard of a cocker puppy breaking it's jaw after falling down 2 steps going out to the garden :o

Tracy you talking bout my Fern ;)
She ran in from out side and there was one step into the house, slipped as she went to go in and crash! chin on the step and yep broken jaw! :'(  She was only 10 wks old at the time and I was away on hol, the people who had her for me (Breeder, as her jabs weren't up to date) felt guilty for weeks, but I also have a door step bout the same size as theirs so it could quite easily of happened here.

All I can say is be very careful with any steps and make sure you have them insured, I was really glad Fern was as she ended up going to a specialist over an hours drive away not just the local vet ;)

No cazza not referring to Fern ;) sorry to hear about another baby with a broken jaw :o

Once a pup gets to 5-6 months then I am o.k about steps, the bones in the hips are formed. As the hips start out as cartlige then I prefer to avoid too much stress on them in the early months.

George has arthritis and Linus has spine problems...I'm pretty sure that its from stairs...and jumping in and out of the car :-\ I try to keep them steady.....but this is cockers we're talkin about!

Anyhow I live in a bungalow now so not such a problem, but the damage has been done. >:(

I didn't let Fern go up or down steps except the front door step, (one small step) and normally I carried her. It was just that she had had a fright out in the breeders garden with one of these noisy planes going over and ran inside. The breeder didn't get a chance to get her as even at 10 wks old this little madam was like lightening ;)

I'm still funny about stairs now, Fern is allowed upstairs in the evening (as our lounge is up there) but at 7 months I still put the stairgate on once we are there so she can't run up and down them.

I think Domino must have been 6-7 months before we let him negotiate the stairs on his own & even longer before he would go down them.

I used to leave the labs even longer if I could.
I'm certainly not carrying 6 month heffalumps up and down them :005:
It's even worse carrying solid 6 month old labs up & down stairs!!

I always lift young puppies in & out of the car; to save our backs we did invest in a car ramp mainly for the old dogs but it is useful for puppies as well. ;)

I used to laugh at the car ramps for the dogs but have gone and got one myself ph34r  It took 2 of us to lift Jock into the car earlier on this year to go to vets, as he won't jump in to the car we always had to lift him, Fern won't jump in either unless it's the drivers door ::)
