Show type or Worker model ?
« on: September 25, 2006, 06:18:02 PM »
At what age does the puppy's coat start to develop?

Louie's mum is a very short haired worker whilst dad very much a full coated show type.  He is currently 10 weeks old and showing some feathers and longish hairs in his coat. Colour is definately after dad.  Which do you think he's going to follow, will he be worker type or show type coat?

Hard to believe he could be a product of such a tiny, very different looking bitch!  Haven't got copy of dads piccie yet.

Sorry, can't help with your query about his coat, but I just wanted to say - he is absolutely beautiful  :luv: :luv:

Lucky you!  His mum is such a pretty girl too.

My Louie is the same age as you know. He has slightly longer hair than your Louie although his ears look the same ;)

Not sure you can predict really.

Buddy is 1/4 worker and has a very light coat on his back which is very easy to take care of, but very heavy feathers on his front legs (straggly and fine on his back legs). He's the most "show type" of his litter I believe.

This is him at about 6 months:

And this is him at 18 months with his mumwho is 1/2working type

Hope that helps a bit, even if my description does make you think he looks more like a freak than a cocker! :005:

If Louie looks half a nice as Buddy and Alfie, then I will be pleased.

Although we didn't go out looking for worker, part or otherwise, when we realised how much shorter the coat was, a half-way house did seem attractive. Especially as we hope that my daughter will do most of the care.

Jasper by comparrison has enough hair for the pair of them, it is much more in order these days, but this was him when he arrived at 9 months!

I love that photo of Jasper too!

When I got Paddy (full show), I hated hated hated topknots, but they've (ahem) really grown on me: if Pads gets one, i'm going to leave it alone - much to OH's relief!

I thought Louie looked like he'd be quite short haired, like his mum, despite the colouring difference.  Is his mum a full worker?  Whenever I see workers, they all seem to look more like a mini-springer than a show cocker, whereas his mum looks like a sleek show cocker...Or is that I'm not mixing in wide enough worker circles??

TBH , until I had Jasper I had no idea that there were differences, I think I had only ever seen dainty Blue roans with the long coats!

Just returned the change of ownership papers for Louie to the Kennel club.  Ordered the 5 generation certificate so will know more about mums breeding when returns.

Will post their pedigrees when I can work out best way of showing all those names!

Hey Jaspersmum.
What a handsome boy! So cute. From the picture I would say he has pretty much a workers coat and dont imagine it will get much longer. Roxi is full worker and has a very short coat but at the age of 10 months is now growing a bit more hair on her apron, legs and bum. Show varietys would be a lot more hairy than what your boy looks.
