Best of luck!  cockers are hard work and take up all of your time but are well worth it....

at least in a year or so time you will have 2 dogs at the same stage.

best of luck and post some pics!! ;)

Just incase you've not seen it, there's a section above 'General Cocker Spaniel discussion' called 'Cocker Questions', click on it and scroll down to 'One cocker or two', it goes through what might happen if you have two puppies at once .

Sorry.....i forgot to add....

Dexter (black and White) is 1/2 show and 1/2 working

Dillon (lemon and white) is full show

I don't know if lemon and white is actually a colour found in show cockers but it is fairly common in working types. Are you sure that Dillon really is a full show cocker? And are they from the same breeder? Why do they have two litters, one mixed and one pure show, especially at the same time??

I don't mean to be rude but are you sure they are a reputable breeder and not a commercial one (i.e. a puppy farmer)?  :-\

I thought a lemon & white (or roan) is simply an orange & white (or roan) with the same pigmentation that liver & white (or roan) have?  That's what I was told when I queried this with the breeder I got Honey from - I had read about it somewhere and was curious!

Hello again

The breeder specialises in gun dogs (cockers and beagles) and told me that they show and still hunt with their dogs....she was extreemly knowledgeable about the breed and answered all our questions.  she was also more than happy to let us see the kennel/mum/dad and everywhere was lovely and clean. All the pups and mum and dad looked to be in good health and lovely natured.
They did have alot of dogs which i was a little suprised about but other than that nothing concerned me that we were buying from a puppy farm.  she seemed to be a very caring breeder and said (which we can only take her word for) that she and her husband interacted with them everyday.
She did say that Dillon may go a little darker as his mum and dad both had orange in them (I'm not very well educated on all the colours etc!!!)  He will only be a pet dog anyway....we have no intention to show him.

Have you had dogs/puppies before?  Only reason I ask is that we have just told our breeder that we're only having one pup after listening to people's advice on here! (can't do the link  but look at the double trouble thread about 10 days ago).  Never having had a dog before and having two children too (7 and 3 and 38 if you count my husband ) I didn't want to take the chance of it all going pearshaped when they were adolescents.  If we didn't have the kids then I would have thought differently.  We now get Harry on the 10th Nov and can't wait  :D
I wish you all the best with your gorgeous pups  :luv: and look forward to hearing about them

This should be the link to the 'double trouble' thread.

I hope it works, I've never done it before .

Working cockers and show cockers are two quite distinct types and you can't show a working cocker so if they show the dogs then they can't be working cockers but on the other hand it's unusual for people to 'hunt' or work with show type cockers, particularly if they are serious about it and not just doing it for fun.

Orange and lemon are two distinct cocker colours. I am by no means an expert on colour genetics but in all the reasearch I did before getting my worker Alfie I never came across a picture of an orange roan working cocker or a lemon roan show cocker. If you look on the photo boards here for working cockers you will see how different they look to show cockers. They are also generally a lot more active and certainly my worker Alfie has an extremely high working drive when out.

Beagles are not gundogs btw, they are hounds and are used for very different purposes to gundogs such as spaniels, retrievers and pointers.

Does the breeder show the cockers and hunt with the Beagles do you think?  if so, the cockers would be show type.   Just out of interest why did they produce a litter of show x working cockers?

I too am a bit concerned, did you see both of the bitches? as it must be show mother/show father
worker mother/show father (you said that they were ½ brothers). If they work their cockers why did they
mate a working bitch with a show dog?. Please ask to look at the pedigrees and make sure that they are O.K.(put them on this forum if not sure)
A good indication that they are a puppy farm is if they have lots of different breeds of dog.
Don't wish to rain on your parade and really hope that you enjoy your puppies but also do not want you to
end up with a poorly dog

Would I be doing wrong if I posted the name of my breeder on this page?  Everyone is putting doubts into my head and I would like to know if my breeder is known to any body else.

Does she have an affix (ie a kennel club name?) - if so, you could search the thread for the affix on COL, and on Google - which might help  ;)

I'll be honest, I would walk away from a breeder you describe - there are too many things that cause me concern: allowing two pups to go to the same home, having two litters at the same time, crossing a show strain with a worker, breeding more than one breed/having lots of dogs and keeping litters in kennels are all things that when combined, strongly suggest to me this breeder is not one of the better ones  :-\

I know how tempting it is "to take the risk" - but the long term heartache that can result is only too real.

If this breeder can explain to you the reasons why she chose to mate the dogs she did, and can assure you that the dogs have been genetically screened for PRA and had recent eye tests, and been hip scored too - then that would go a long way to confirm that she is experienced and knowledgeable about what she is doing  ;)

Yes there is an 'affix' - not sure if I can say what it is - but a search on COL and Google does not bring any thing up.

I think its wonderful .... two puppies. I think it might be double the trouble but soooo rewarding. I think if your prepared which you sound like you are and im sure you have taken into account the amount of time you and your partner are going to have to spend with them it will be great . Most people on this website are on it due to them having a love of cockers therefore you would not be a member on here if you did not have the best intentions for your puppies and wanting to give them all the love , training and affection they need. Good luck and im sure you will be a happy family .

I agree with the above. I actually found 2 together easier than one no crying and no chewing and great mates. welcome to the forum
