First Vaccination
« on: July 16, 2007, 02:48:41 PM »
Hello all,

Now I would usually get the pups vaccinated at 8 weeks old and then the follow up gets done at 10 weeks old and so they're able to run around everywhere from 11 weeks old.

However, a few of the pups are going to be travelling around a bit for the first few weeks after they leave me, eg: going off to the country house, rural retreat in Wales etc... and our own Moss is going to be taken with us over to Northern Ireland for a week because of my cousins wedding when he's 10/11 weeks old. So I've had a chat with my vet about vaccinations and we've decided that it'd be best to have their first vaccination at 7 weeks old and then the follow up at 9 weeks so that the pups will be completely vaccinated when they're travelling about a  bit at approximately 10 weeks old. I think this is sensible and it would make travelling with the pups much easier for the new owners concerning loo stops etc...

But I would like to know what you guys think about having the vaccinations done at week 7 rather than 8.

So far as settling the pup in with the new owners etc... don't worry because the new owners aren't taking any of the pups anywhere for at least the first 2 weeks after leaving me, and most have an older dog for the new pup to bond with and snuggle up to, so I think the pups will do fine with moving about a bit during week 10/11.

Your thoughts on this much appreciated  :D

Best wishes

Mary

Hello

I am not a breeder but have concerns about early vaccinations as I recently lost my dog aged 6 to an autoimmune problem and there seems to be a possible line of thinking that early jabs might cause problems in some dogs later on. The thread is : http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=31458.0 with some feed back from other breeders.

I am getting a new pup in a week and my breeders vet has recommended first jab at 9 weeks... all of this seems to be a bit of an unknown at the moment though, and I'm obviously very sore from what happened to my dog, so might not take as much of a balanced view on this as I should. But I do feel that if there is a chance that his autoimmune problems were caused by an early jab (he had his between 6-7 weeks), I'm going to be a bit cautious with my next dog and have him done a bit later. I'm going to try and socialise him as well as I can with fully vaccinated dogs belonging to friends in my garden..

Hi Hannah, thanks for your reply, I have read your thread with interest. I have consulted all of the soon to be puppy owners and they're all happy for their pups to be vaccinated at 7 weeks, but I'm unsure now!  :-\

I think I'll take the pups in on Friday and highlight these concerns with the vet and see wat he thinks as to whether the vaccinations should go ahead or not.

Do you know what brand of vaccination your dog was vaccinated with? as I know there's various different ones available now and maybe one's safer than the others?

Best wishes

Harlem was vaccinated at 7 weeks by the breeder. I was under the impression that the 2nd vaccination couldn't be given at less than 10 weeks of age which is why I waited the 3 weeks between  :-\  His first vaccine was Vanguard and the 2nd was Nobivac
Dallas ( 10) & Disney ( 9 )

Hi Mary,

I'm afraid as it was six years ago, I don't know what he was first vaccinated with as it was done by the breeders vet and at the time I didn't think too much about it. I might be able to find out what the second jab was as that was done by my vet at 10 weeks. I'll be seeing my vet either next Friday or Monday with new puppy (if all goes to plan I pick him up on Friday) and will be having a further conversation with her about it then - think that's probably too late for you though? I'll update you with any feedback I get.

I'm sure in the majority of cases there is no problem and I don't have any 'hard evidence' that this was the definite cause behind my dog's problem but it's possible and because I have the decision to make about when my new pup is vaccinated, I just feel I have a chance & choice to be a bit cautious this time (probably unnecessarily so). I guess it's a bit like the MMR problem with kids - because of vaccination programs reducing the cases of disease we now have a bit more of a liberty to consider all this a bit further. Without further medical research we all have to apply a bit of guess work, weigh up the odds and do what we 'feel' is right.. tricky stuff!

Hi Gill, I will ring the vets again tomorrow to get the low down on what age the second vaccination can be given, if it's only at 10 weeks then I'll definitely wait the extra week for the first vaccination and have it done at 8 weeks. Thanks for letting me know

Hi Hannah,
I completely understand your stand point and am very thankful for your opinion on the subject as I want to be armed with as much information as possible about this in order to make the best decision for all of the pups. I'm so sorry that you went through what you did with your old boy, it must've been heart breaking  :'(  All the best for your new pup  :-*

Best wishes
