11 week old pup?
« on: January 26, 2009, 07:10:25 PM »
Just wondered what you think about picking up a pup at 11 or 12 weeks?
I always read that the ideal to have them home is 8 weeks as its a good time for socialisation.

By 11 weeks is it too late or would you forsee any problems?

I think it would depend on the situation the pup was in for the extra weeks.
Is the breeder doing the things you would have done?

Thats a really good question!

I am going on Wed to look at the pups and will ask that.  Do you think if she has been socialising them then it would be ok?

I got Florence at 10 weeks and as anyone who has met her can tell you, she is perfectly socialised and happy.  :luv:
Has the pup had the first vaccination as this will make a big difference to how soon you could take it out?

Mole was almost 11 weeks when we collected him in December, the breeder held on to him with a litter mate she was keeping as we were having a new kitchen fitted. I thought it worked really well and he settled in beautifully with Baja and had an extra couple of weeks knowledge that Baja didn't have when we collected him at 8 weeks.

I picked Tessa up when she was 16 wks, also her breeder had been giving her homeopathic treatment for prevention of the diseases (which I didn't trust) so she didn't go out til she was about 5 mths old.  She was always wary of men and slightly wary of children.  She didn't make new doggy friends easily (but then she was bowled over as a pup). So whether this was her personality or lack of socialisation I will never know.

Dexter is the complete opposite, I picked him up at just under 8 wks, and we were going out by 12 wks.  He is very bold and fearless and loves everyone.

Hi

I got both my boys at 12 weeks of age - had absolutely no problems.  In fact the toilet training was quicker, and they had been in kennels for about 2 weeks.

I got my girl at 16weeks and I must say that the breeder never had a collar or lead on her and after a 2hour journey i took her for a quick walk and after a few mins she did her business and she is a very good girl loves visitors and has settled in very well apart from the odd accident im very very happy with her, she dosent cry or bark and settles very quickly when i tell her its bed time.......

Good luck !!!

I'm sure Dallas came to me at 11 weeks (might have been 10) as the breeder wouldn't let them go until the vaccinations were complete.  He hadn't had any socialisation outwith being handled by the staff aand when I got him home he was really nervous of everyday noises and traffic scared the bejeesus out of him! Unfortunately he fell ill with HGE the day after I got him home so that set things back even further. I was panicking so much about him still not being socialised at that point that I flooded him (obv wasn't aware of that at the time) which didn't help at all surprisingly  ::)  He is 6 now and fine with people, fine with other dogs (but if one looked at him the wrong way, he will squeal and run  ph34r) but in all other respects, he is scared of his own shadow. Blowing a raspberry has him diving to the corner of the room trying to dig his way to australia while shaking like a leaf!

I did say never again but now I think that if there was a sufficient socialisation program in place, and all other boxes were ticked with regard to the breeder and litter, then I might consider it.

Good luck for tomorrow  :D

We were not able to collect Muffin until she was 11 weeks old because her breeder was waiting for FN tests to come back before deciding which puppies to keep for herself.  Muffin is a lovely dog, gets on well with other dogs and people, any slight problems are to do with inadequate training from me, and are not related to collecting her a few weeks later than normal.  However I was lucky as I found a very good breeder who would have been doing all of the right things anyway.

well we might be... :lol2:  We've wanted an addition for a while now.
I have put in loads of work with my norty boy over the last couple of years so I could be completly confident :005: that we could all cope with a young dog or pup

He has come on beautifully with pups and other dogs, and is a lot more tolerant and I have a fab behaviourist who will help through the first couple of days with introductions if I need too.
