need help
« on: July 21, 2009, 09:31:08 AM »
Hello everyone, we have a wonderful golden cocker bitch aged 3, together we have completed good citizen obedience awards and now compete in heelwork to music..............now my problem , we have had a beautiful blue roan puppy. My older dog constantly growls at her, she has never been that keen on puppies in general.........do you think Im doing the right thing by ignoring this behaviour. The puppy sleeps in a crate and does not constantly pester. I am avoiding issues that may cause a reaction i.e food. We have had puppy for a week now, any ideas how long it may take for them to become friends.

Sorry but - arrrgghhhh I forgot about this when getting a new pup (sorry my new one arrives this week)

It took my lot a good two months to settle with each other (guys who know me, i am talking about jock getting used to having Fern around)  when we got Braan tho it took max of 2 weeks - so every dog is different as with humans

Yes you are doing right in keeping them seperate for food etc all contact should be supervised until they have settled in together, so the fact that you can crate the new pup is great  :D

it'll take time but take baby steps and you will get there, I used to take pup out in the garden and tire her out and put her in the crate and then take the other dog for a nice long walk, then come back and take the pup out to the shops etc (carrying) to socialise her which gave the other dog space at home alone

Good luck and let us know how you get on

oooo welcome to COL  :D

There was never any love lost between Ben (golden) and Jak (blue roan) Ben was always the Mr grumpy and in time Jak new his place. There were times when Ben would lick Jak’s face but he would always keep him at arms length. :luv:

I have Millie 14 years old and Hattie 15 months.  Millie was none to pleased when Hattie arrived they were OK in the garden as Millie could avoid her but in the house that was difficult.  For the first few month Millie would not let Hattie on the sofa or near her.  To be honest it was just time, they do not cuddle up together or anything like that, but sometimes there a tender moments which in nice to see.  I think Hattie knows how far she can push Millie.  The one thing i did was, always keep an eye on them both and don't leave the pup alone in the same room, if you cant be there put her in her create, its better to be safe.

Hi Kay, I have Indie who is 18 months and Saffie who is 4 months, they get on fine but i can see Saffie becoming the top dog. I would say that things will settle down and that its just natural doggy behaviour, ickle puppies have to learn how to behave and be put into line.

Its really early days yet, try not to worry

Hello Barbara thanks for letting me know about the photos. I am really proud of her, but now we are in intermediate it gets a lot harder........I dont know about you, but I am nervous before I go in the ring and then when it starts to go well I tend to relax a bit, but in the past we have had some disasters one that particularly comes to mind was when part of the routine was for Rosie to run around me and then come in to heel........she just kept running around me very fast and would not stop...obviously on that occasion we came nowhere. I watched your videos on youtube great to see another cocker working so well, I see you do freestyle, keep up the good work.........come on Barbara lets show them what theses cockers are made of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
