More x-rays needed.....
« on: July 23, 2010, 03:06:23 PM »
About a month ago Sweep was diagnosed with having very elongated middle toes which were giving her cause to limp etc. due to early onset arthritis.   We have her on Seraquin now to assist.  Our vet said there was nothing more they could do.

OH & I decided to seek a second opinion and the second vet has referred Sweeps notes and original x rays to an orthopeadic specialist vet near Winchester.  I don't know if any COL'ers have any experience of this referral centre.  Anyway today the second vet has come back saying the specialist is not convinced her paws are the cause of the problem and it might be her elbow joints but obviously we have to have some more x rays done.  Apparently if it is her elbows there is an operation that can help.  Does anyone else have experience of this?

Incidentally all the vets have said they have never seen a paw condition like it before.

Just being a worried cocker mummy and fretting about it all.   :-\ :'( :'(

I can't give any advice about Sweep's toes or elbows, but I guess the Orthopaedic Specialist Vet practice is Anderson Sturgess, at Hursley, near Winchester?

If so, William and I had a very positive experience when he was referred for a MRI scan on his back last summer following recurring incidences of back pain that my usual vet couldn't fully diagnosis. We had an initial appointment, then William had the scan a week or so later, then back for the results. I saw the same vet each time and he was very caring and very good at answering my questions and explaining things.

All the staff seem really pleasant and helpful. When I left William there for his scan the nurse who took him was very kind to him (and me) and as I pulled up in my car to collect him I remember seeing 2 nurses gently assisting and literally supporting a Labrador that had obviously had major surgery, judging by all his shaved areas, to walk very slowly to a patch of grass so that he could have a pee, bless him.

So I reckon Sweep will be in good hands there. Good luck  :luv:

If it is the specialist that Elaine mentions, Woodlander, then we too have used them with Purdey when she had lungworm. We saw Kit Sturgess & as Elaine says, Sweep will be in very good hands there  ;)
Unfortunatly I don't have any knowledge of the condition you describe but hope they get to the bottom of Sweeps problem soon  :luv:

positive thoughts & caring wishes for you both  ;)  :-*
If your dog thinks you're the best.....don't seek a second opinion!!
