Could he just have the utility area as his bedroom? Or do you specifically want him crated at night?

He can certainly have that. The thoughts of crating him with door shut were a) to help with toilet training (so far he has gone every time outside), to protect furniture in utility/coffee room (early days but no chewing of chairs yet...) and also to allow cat to walk past him at night (cat flap in back door - looked at putting one in dining room glass door but was £200).

He seems to go happily into crate, has made a little den with blanket etc in there but this morning has taken to "cat napping" in a stack a jack that has some cut off vet bed in or on door mat with door open to garden!

So tonight.... who knows!

Fantastic, to echo what has already been said, I would continue to try and crate train with the door shut.   Your furniture may not last as he gets older.    The early puppy stage is when they are angels in my opinion - the severe chewing stage comes slightly later and we are still going through that now.

Thankfully I can crate Quinn with no problems whilst I am at work, the furniture and things he has chewed has been whilst I've been at home in another room with him not crated  :005:

Well we crated with no problems last night !

He went to bed at 10.30pm and then literally on the dot whimpered every 2 hours for a wee. He settled down and accepted the door closing on each time. The last time awake was clearly "ok i am here and awake" so wasnt too keen on door closing that time so I did persue it. But he has had 2 naps in crate already this morning with door closed!

I put radio on quietly last night and also put a jumper of mine in his basket - who knows if that was the key but fingers crossed it carrys on as a closed crate will give me piece of mind!

He is abit of a stone eater when out in garden mind you!

Happy Mothers day btw

Sara

A Lujesa baby - how lucky are you  :luv: :luv: :luv:

And he's Florence's nephew  :shades:, if he's any where near as loving as Florence you'll have the best friend ever!  :luv:

I am delighted that things are going so well, as others have said the crate is invaluable and it sounds like you're getting there.

Welcome home Toby  :luv: :bigarmhug: :luv:

Hello Auntie Florence!

Toby is a cracker, we are loving having him here. Had a house full of family here today and he was a star! Bit bitey and excited but still performed all necessary wees & poo! Today he has taken himself into the crate when tired and each time slept for an hour happily with the crate door shut  :luv:

Ok phew this is the first time I have had a chance to do an update!

I cant believe Toby has only been with us less than a week. I love him! He is a poppet and I think the girls and hubby are rather smitten too...

So we are weeing and pooing in garden 100% (opps sorry he is !) and not really looking for a reward for doing so, so now its "good boy" every now and then. He whimpers when he needs to go but at moment I am most tuned into that (funny that!)

He is eating and sleeping well. Since Sunday he has been happy with crate door closed, although he likes to sleep in middle of utility room floor on the smelly "wipe your feet" towel. Last night he went to sleep at 10pm and woke at 4pm. He then does rather think thats it for night, whereas I would like to have another bit of snooze so he goes back to crate. Not too keen as surely its play time!

We have been doing some good socialising of people and noises. Hoover ok, not keen on lawn mower today but he will get used to that. He has been taken into our village in arms - I have been spotted outside Aldi just waitng for someone to say "ah can I say hello to your puppy" and of course thats why I am there! He has had rides in the car and even coffee at Grandma and Grandads!

Toby sits when asked to (and shows those big eyes for a bit of food!) and he seems to frown at me saying "leave" (the curtain looks like a big tuggy I know but you cant have it) and tomorrow we might go for abit of "stay"!

Meeting George the cat is going well, George looks down his nose at this bundle of quivering gold fur. Toby squeaks when he spots George but we are gently holding him back so he doesnt chase the cat! Small steps in terms of getting to know you.

The most stark feeling is that we feel like we have a baby in the house. "Who is watching Toby" is heard and "do you need a wee". When he sleeps there is a hush in the house - not that we need to be quiet but more as we all go "phew" and relax.

Why can I chew my tuggy but not the curtain - it looks the same.

Why cant I pull on your trousers but we pull my tuggy

Why can I chew on stick in garden but not the table leg

And Mum why cant I get into that big plant pot in the corner of the lounge when I climb on the plants outside!

Ah life is confusing being 11 and half weeks old   :dunno:
