Advocate / Advantix advice
« on: May 24, 2012, 12:08:18 PM »
I have just bought advantix for Charlie (we are going away in summer to a tick infested area so thought I’d protect against it) – I wouldn’t normally use advantix (i.e. treat for ticks). However Charlie also has advocate used on him – which a lot of people on here said I could use together with advantix (but at 2 weekly intervals). I went to the vets last night to buy the advantix and they would not let me buy advocate as well – the vet (was talking to the receptionist at the same time) said that they CANNOT be used at the same time as they both contain the same active ingredient. I’ve got another wormer for a month or so whilst I use the advantix; so can I actually use them together or not? (I’m just curious now).

My beautiful little boy Charlie :)

I wouldn't use them together as I was told exactly the same thing. I use Advantix on my boys from April to October/November then I switch to Advocate.

I think that some of the confusion possibly comes from the similarity in names - we've got Advocate, Advantage, Advantix....

Advocate has two active ingredients, Imidacloprid and Moxidectin.  It treats fleas, mites, and lice, also most intestinal worms, and it is preventative for lungworm.  It does not treat tapeworms or ticks.  So whilst you are using Advocate, it is sensible to also use a wormer that does treat for tapeworms.  Treating for ticks is a separate issue.

Advantage and Advantix both contain Imidacloprid.  They treat fleas - the manufacturer claims that both of these kill at least 98% of fleas on a dog within 12 hours.

Advantix also contains permethrin which repels and kills ticks.  This is fine for dogs, but this ingredient is highly toxic to cats - so if you have a cat in your household, and your dog socialises with the cat, then the manufacturer recommends that you don't use Advantix.

As all three of these products have Imidacloprid as an ingredient, you should not use more than one of them at a time.

I hope this helps a bit.

Absolutely! No AdvanTIX if you own cats! I had gotten free samples of Advantix for my dogs which I used on them. My cat often sleeps in the dog bed with Jewel and grooms her too  :005: :luv: but within 24 hours of contact with the dogs Advantix she started having non stop seizures and ended up at the emergency vet in the wee hours of the night. :'(

Fortunately she pulled through and is fine, but cant stress enough: no Advantix if you own cats!

My dog is on advocate and we went to a tick area for a week holiday in may so i guess it would be good to share my experience with you...

We normally apply advocate on 1st, and we worm him late may and late nov.
We got the advise from vet nurse:
Apply frontline which can protect aginst ticks on 1st may, instead of the usul advocate and do worming tablet late may as usual. Then do advicate in june as usual. However worming tablet and advocate need to b 7days apart...
So he will be protected from ticks during holidays
If he caught worms as he uses frontline not advocate, the worming tablet will sort that out
Since where we live got loads of snails, if he caught lungworm in may before or after hols, the advocate in june could sort that out....

Hope this helps

It's amazing how varied the advice is from one vet to another.
Last year the vet had suggested that if we had a tick problem them switch to Advantix for the summer months and then back to Advocate.  But as Darwin loves playing with snails I prefer to stick with Advcoate and then treat the ticks if necessary.  Previously I've had a Frontline spray from the vets.  When Darwin was last at the vets, I asked if I needed to use a separate wormer, and was told it shouldn't be necessary
