Bentley, Benters, the cu dhu, the wee black fox

I was scared of dogs when I was young.   I didn’t like them and thought they were a nuisance.

Then I met a couple of friendly cocker spaniels at a friend’s house and really liked them.

We got Bentley a working cocker spaniel puppy for my son’s Christmas.  He was small and black with a white bib.

He was pleasant enough and wagged his tail a lot and liked being petted.

The walks became more and more enjoyable and I saw the seasons again.

At first, he was scared to look into my eyes, but when he realized I liked him, he did.  And all the time we got on better and better.  It got to the stage that just looking at his eyes made me smile.

He rolled on his back, he charged about, he slept so peacefully and he was so friendly to other dogs.

He was always there, always loving, always forgiving and always happy.

Eventually he got old and sick and today he died.

I am bereft and completely stunned.  It is true that the price of love is grief.  I will miss him for the rest of my life.  As will my family.  Today we all cried.

People may say, he was only a dog.  But a dog can teach us more about love than people can.

A dog is one of life’s gifts.  I am truly grateful for the gift of Bentley.  He was - and will always be - one of the best parts of my life.
