What's the average age to come into season?
« on: September 18, 2012, 10:25:58 PM »
Vet would like to spay her before her first season but I'd like to leave it as long as possiable.
How much can we push it?
What's the general age?
(no idea if this is in the right section)

gemma was 11months. Our vet now prefers to spade before 1st season, but this was not always the case as the same vet made us wait until after  the first season with our girl mindy. (although that was a few years ago)

I think there is lots of debate whether to spay before or after the first season. My vet suggested to us we spay Willow prior to her first season however after doing a lot of research we opted after her first season when weighing everything up. Lots of people on here will have differing views and if you view some old posts in the health section you will get both view of members on both.

Its down to personal choice.  :D Our vet did say to us if we hadnt done it by 6 months we should wait as they could have a season after this time as they didnt want to do the op if it was looming. Willow had her first season at 13 months.

For me it was a hard decision to make to have her spayed although I felt it was the right decision for us on the long term if that makes sense.

Good luck with your decision. xx

said 6 months here too which isn't that far away & she just seems so small  :o
I'd like her done before season but will be reading more into it. just seeing how far can push putting it off but still get it done before hand. wish there was some text book that demanded they came into heat on certain dates  :005:

Waiting until after the first season gives them a chance to mature fully.

I've always believed that a season will mature them internally and mentally and also bring the adult coat in so if spaying I would always wait till after first season at least but someone will probably come along with a differing opinion which also makes sense.... ;)

My older dog was spayed at 5 months only because if my border collie had spayed there was a good chance she would have never got mammary tumours that spread to her liver and she had to be PTS at 8. But that was just my personal choice as we got Bo days after Lucy was PTS so we were still raw when she was spayed but i would do it again
