Would spaying help?
« on: March 21, 2008, 08:47:14 AM »
Millie has some aggression issues with other dogs, now I know her a bit better I can avoid most situations where it would be a problem and she is really good with Charlie (apart from being possessive of toys) who is still entire. But she does seem to be worse with bitches than dogs. For example today a bitch ran over to her on our walk and Millie barged straight into her snarling and they started to fight, luckily Millie came away when I whistled so there was no damage done. Most male dogs she will be fine with and only tell them off if they are rude but with a lot of bitches she will continuously act dominant/aggressive or just launch into a full on fight. Has anyone else had a bitch like this? Or had a bitch spayed and found it made them less fiesty?

I know it helped one bitch but her aggression was usually just before during and just after her seasons

I dont know about helping the aggression  :-\ It may and it may not. I have a bitch here at the moment who tried to eat the face off all my bitches on our initial meeting, she has been spayed as the owners were advised to get her done. She has been here a week staying and with careful interaction with all the other dogs here, she is actually playing with all of them now. She will however make a bee line for any new bitch coming in here that she hasnt met before but I have been supervising this and involve myself in the initial meeting and I find a remarkable difference with her, she now plays where she didnt when she first came:luv: I would maybe work on the socialisation part as it really isnt a characteristic of entire bitches to be aggressive as such (apart from maybe season time).  :D

Spaying is not recommended for young bitches showing aggressive behaviours as it can make it worse I've heard....Not sure how old your girl is. I agree with cazzie that controlled socialisation is the way to go.

There have been studies carried out that have shown this.
bitches should not be spayed within two months of the estrus period to avoid sudden contrast between the presence and absence of progesterone.
If a female displays aggressive tendencies prior to spaying and before twelve months of age then the risk of increased aggressive behaviour must be balanced against the potential health issues that may arise from the dog remaining entire.
certainly lots of spayed bitches out there who still  show aggressive tendencies.

She will be two in April and had her last season over Christmas. Her old owners told me that she is good with other dogs so if thats true then its new behaviour since we had her, perhaps its being caused through fear or anxiety  :-\. I'm really glad I asked this as we were thinking of having her spayed anyway, definitely not going to though if it makes her worse!
