Title: Rolo and Liath coughing and being sick.
Post by: *jean* on April 14, 2008, 03:22:30 PM
Have an appoitment at vets at 4.15. no doubt they wont have a clue Ill get anti biotics ( again liath has had this a few months ago)
rolo lying flat out at my feet, his cough is dry and hoarse sounding. any movement sets it off. no temperature.they both still are eating.
bet its kennel cough but where would they have got it from ? they havent been with strange dogs recently.
at the adnanced dog training its only liath and henry( sisters dog) this last 2 weeks.
 v strange,
any ideas. can it be carried on clothing?

Oh no hopefully not related but Glen and Sally have developed a dry cough this morning. I thought it was because they had been being sick due to worming.....fingers crossed that my gut is right and thats all they have.

I was told when Glen had kennel caugh that him even seeing another dog in the park or whatever could pass it on to another unsuspecting dog.

If Im wrong and they are displaying the same symptoms as your two could it be one of the dogs Glen intorduced himself to last friday? 10days....is that about the right incubation period?

Hope Rolo and Liath are feeling better soon.  :-*

It says between 3 and 10 days incubation.....does that fit in?

Good luck at the vet.

d'you know I never thought of that. they so rarely meet strange dogs.. I always think the vets must be THE unhealthiest place for them. last time liath was like this was after she went fot her vaccs. think she picked up a bug in the surgery. but the other 2 never got it.
I assumed ( wrongly I expect) that kC would be in the immunisations they get, Im going to ask. and if not why not?

so if it is KC ( how do you get a definate diagnosis?  last time the vet said liath had an upper respiratory infection and a bit of tracheitis, BUT if the other dogs started coughing then it was kc but the treatment would be the same... ph34r ) SO reassuring!
how long until my 2 can mix with others then? assuming it is kc?

I was told it wasn't included in the immunisation because there are so many different strains of it and you can not immunise against them all.

Last time I got kids Benylyn for Glen and never gave him antibiotics and he cleared up in no time.

My vet was also unable to confirm it but a neighbour had got a rescue dog the week before that was diagnosed with KC so we just sort of put two and two together. Sally never got it and I just kept them away from other dogs for 10 days to make sure it never spread any further. Another neighbour treated her dog a couple of days later with the Benylyn because it looked like she was developing it and hers cleared up in no time as well.  ;)

benylin is full of sugar and rubbish - Manuka honey does the trick  ;)

if either of them have a suspected chest infection they'll get anti-b's

I don't think they do. no temp ( that i can tell without a rectal thermometer   ;) ) no panting, just hacking dry coughs and an occasional spew.( caused by the cough.. almost sounds like they have something in their throats they are hacking up.)
oh poop now pepper doing it.
manuka honey all round!

at least if it's all three you don't have to isolate one  ::)

big squidges to them all (it'll sound like you're in a TB ward with that lot coughing  :'( )

When mine have had it I usually wait about a week after the coughing has stopped.

you've got 3 fit dogs there - if it's a bog standard strain, and you've got it early they should be over the coughing within a few days  :D

Just now they seem ok, Sally is coughing about once and hour but is no longer being sick. Glen is a bit more frequent with the cough and has sicked up bile about 8 time today. His breakfast stayed down though and it is just bile and froth. I was convinced it was due to the worming tablets as Sally was sick about 12oclock yesterday but never coughed until this morning. Glen started being sick about 1.30am and got the cough about 6 this morning. It does seem awful coincidental and now I am feeling well guilty as Fred was here most of today and we met up yesterday afternoon so if they have got KC and he managed to avoid it before he's probably got it now  ph34r ph34r

I hope they're all ok. No sign of any coughing with any of my lot, Alfie and Tilly had the kc vax the year before last (Tilly had it from the rescue) but I didn't renew it and it doesn't work half the time anyway  ::)

Poor guys, and Glen and Sally too  :'(  I really hope they're all ok  :luv:

well tis kennel coff!  ph34r
antibiotics and benylin is what she advised tho I think I may buy manuka honey instead of benylin.
I got charged 1 consultation as I took all 3 intogether. separately it would have been 63.60 I paid 21.15 plus 3.60 for the anti b's. Im getting fly to them.
I kept them out in the car so as not to infect other dogs.  then once surgery was over I had to take them in so I was there a while.
they all behaved well and only pepper managed to leap off the table as soon as I put her on it, the vet commented on how muscular and fit they all were and was very taken with liath. I think she would have kept her if Id left her behind! ( as if!) she kept saying she couldnt believe how laid back they were.. Rolo had stretched out for a snooze on the floor while pepper was being examined. I think Ive converted her to working cockers.  :luv:

I currently have 2 dogs down with it - its absolutely rife here just now. I used Dorwests Garlic & Fenugreek tablets in January when we had it and it worked a treat so am using that again this time.

Well I have had another terrible night...Sally is not too bad but at one point in the night Glen was coughing so hard and struggling to get his breath so much he started to panic so so did I. He seems a bit better this morning but he gets stressed when he has a coughing fit. All through the night everytime he coughed (every half hour - hour) I had to sit up and calm him down again. I am soooo knackered.  :'(

my 3 slept ok the odd cough. pepper is coughing the most ( she was last to start coughing) movement sets it off so no walks today either.
liath was the 1st to cough and hardly coughs now so think the antibs are working .
silence at the moment, they are all snoozing. they are eating fine and only boking up watery stuff. its like a hair is stuck in their throats the noise they make hacking away till they spit out a gob of water. well thats what rolo and pep are like liath is too ladylike to puke. just the odd cough now with her tho she sounded like a 40 fag a day gel yesterday! ps i got ordinary honey as we dont have manuka in rogart plenty ordinary stuff tho and its doing the trick. ( my dad used to keep bees.. I really hate having to pay for the stuff ,  ;) Im having some on my toast!  :luv:)
hope my 3 dont infect anyone else. the vet said once they stop coughing they arent so infectious. fingers crossed.

That is exactly the same as my two....their appetites are fine and they are keeping their meals down but they are continually bringing up froth and water...its minging. Sally had not brought anything up so far this morning so fingers crossed she's on her way back to normal but Glen.....being a bloke....is milking it for everything he has got  ::)  :005:

I use Manuka Honey and also Dorwest Garlic and Fenugreek tablets. I also use Kennel Cough Nosodes from Holistic Pet Supplies http://www.holisticpetsupplies.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=343 (http://www.holisticpetsupplies.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=343) I also buy other products from that site, it's one of my favourites  ;) I also like this handy calander which tells you when to administer the nosodes http://www.holisticpetsupplies.co.uk/nosode_calendar.php (http://www.holisticpetsupplies.co.uk/nosode_calendar.php)

I'm so sorry. I seem to have missed this. Blame the school holidays and lots of outings!

Sounds like you might be over the worst of it by now but sounds like a really nasty dose of KC.

Hope you and your doglets are all 100% soon.

Glad to hear they are all on the road to recovery. Dallas is much better now and no longer coughing but Harlem isn't getting any better and thats been a week so may need to take him to the vets. His reverse sneezing is really bad at the minute and because he panics when it happens, its so much worse  ::)
