Title: HELP MY CAMERA HAS JUST DIED!!!
Post by: Harveypops on April 17, 2009, 10:26:01 PM
I've got a canon 1000d EOS. I've just bought a new lens for it, canon make 55-250. I've taken 3 pictures with it. The LCD screen is now not working and everytime I try to take a picture it just says busy through the view finder.  >:(

What's happened?! The only concern I have is that the  box my lens came with shows the different models it can be used with and my model isn't one mentioned. HOWEVER, Jessops and another camera shop have been letting me try out a variety of lens (including the canon 55-250) on the 1000d model in their shop.

Sorry if this is a ramble. I'm taking it back to Jessops tomorrow. Any ideas what happened. I've had it less than 2 weeks.  >:(

Have you tried removing the batteries from the camera for a few minutes, then replacing them?
It might make the camera 'reset' itself.

Oh dear. Hope it's nothing serious - mine better not try this >:D

a few questions ...

does it do the same with the other lens on ?
is the memory card seated in ok ?
check the contacts between the lens and camera are clean

Still not working with the original lens on. The contacts appear to be clean and the memory card seems to be in fine. The LCD screen is showing zero signs of working. The flash and auto focus are all working, but it won't actual take a picture.

just been reading up on this and it seems to be a common problem on the 1000d, couple more things to try

check the popup flash is down correctly (press on top of camera)

if you put the camera in manual mode (turn the dial to M) does it do the same ?

The grand old age of 2 weeks today.  :'( :'( It's taken alot of photos in it's small time with me.  Thanks for trying. I'm hoping they'll just do a straight swap. Do you think the new lens may not be compatible?

the new lens is not the issue, it would not have caused this.
There seems to be a common problem with the 1000d, just read numerous reports with people having the same errors (its prob only 1 in a 1000 ... but its obviously not a one off), those that would not get swapped in the shop got sent back to canon and repaired under warrenty, all have had new mainboards fitted, so its obviously a common fault, might be worth playing your face a bit in the shop and seeing if they will go part way to changing to the 450 .. or a swap for a 400 and a bit of a refund if they have one in stock
, dont worry about the megapixels, my 350d is only 8mp but I can print A3 prints from it without any problem

hope thats some help
Phil

I've just read the link. Trust me to get the dudd? Hopefully I'll just be able to exchange it as I'm within my 28 days?? I think from my OH'S response changing to the 450d is not a popular option  :'(

I was looking forward to taking some pics of Harvey with it over the weekend  :'(  I still think Harvey played a small role with my camera's rather sudden death  :005:

I will. Have you read the link Superscot posted? I was so dizzy n the shop when I bought the camera (exact words were- I'm looking for a camera to take pictures of a very fast dog) I'm worried they'll think it was just me.  ph34r

I know, it’s quite scary - wish I’d done more research now :-\.  I bought mine for the exact same reason as you did .  What’s worrying me is I got mine off eBay - I’m not sure what cover I’d have if something went wrong ph34r. Fingers crossed! Good luck for tomorrow!

You should be OK, you've had yours for quite some time now.

My camera looks pretty pathetic now. My new found hobby has also come to a very abrupt end  :'(

I’d be just as upset - I love my camera, it’s very addictive.  Are you sure Harvey hasn’t been plotting behind your back? :005:

The flash on my 350d stopped working about 4 months after I bought it, rather frustratingly as my husband was on his way to a stag do which meant no night time photos. I took it back to John Lewis and they said they would have to send it  away to be repaired but I complained and said I needed it for the wedding and they gave me the shop model (with my lens). That one's been fine and it was 2 years ago now.
You should be able to exchange it though if it's only a couple of weeks old.

I've had my 400d for 2 years nearly - not one problem - just the luck of the draw I guess :dunno:

almost the same here with my 350d, canon do make good cameras and if they do go wrong, they also do fix them, it does seem there is a bad bunch of 1000d's which is a real shame, the shop should swap without any problem, and if it happens to someone else who's camera is out of the 28 day etc ... then canon will repair it

try not to be too disparaged, and let us know how you get on#

I went in with my OH, as I was not trusted to go into the shop on my own.  ph34r So it was a straight swap  :'( The 450d had gone up in price as well, as when I bought my camera it was £469.00- it's now £599.99. If it had been the original price I think I would have bartered a bit.  ;)

Just need to get lessons now. I saw on another thread that alot of you don't use the auto focus and just use the manual focus.  :o :o :o You need glasses to make out what I've taken a picture of when I use  the manual focus.  :005: :005:

Jennybee- that 55-250mm lens is fab!  :D Had a practice with it with Harvey racing around the field. It can also be doubled up as a spying device so I could see what bits of rubbish Harvey was picking up at the other end of the field. It's also very good in the house for reading the teletext on the TV if you're far away and haven't got your glasses  :005: :005:

That sounds excellent!  I’m really going to have to get one now - for the doggie part not the teletext one :005: :005:.  So pleased you got it sorted, I bet Harvey’s gutted

He got a game of fetch so I could take pics of him running (will post tomorrow) so I think he's warming to it. I can still see his face sink when he sees me picking up the camera though  :005: :005:

glad you got it sorted :)

keep the focus in automatic, and experiment with the shooting modes, when we talk about manual, generaly its having the shooting mode in manual rather than in Aperture Priority or Time Value

now lets see some more piccies :)
