I think she may be after one of these (http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/product-04802641-pdt.html?srcid=198&xtor=SEC-104-GOO&mctag=gg_goog_7904&gclid=CPuSntDe5KUCFcoifAodZkMlSg)

simplyelectronics may be cheaper

What's your budget?

The Nikon Coolpix S3000 might suit her - Nikon is a great make (as is Canon) and it also comes in a variety of colours.

I have a Canon Ixus, great wee camera, comes in different colours too.  Had it a couple of years now and totally love it  :D

I used Simply Electronics for my new lens.  Good price but took a while before it arrived.  Might be worth ringing them to check how quickly they will post as its a Christmas Present!

You can't got wrong with the canon ixus range, but does not have the screen front and back......I know there is one marketed at teenagers taking "hold the camera out" pictures.....the second screen allows them to see what they are shooting.....

Thank you, have gone for a Samsung ST600 in Violet :shades:

Now, can anyone recommend any nice starter books for digital photography?

Gosh - she's a lucky girl! That's quite an expensive one for a first camera!  :shades:

Does it come with a case? (some of them don't and you have to buy it separately)
And a memory card/single slot USB reader?

I will ask my daughter about the book - I can't remember which one she had.

I know, although we found quite a good deal ;)    My girls do get spoilt a bit at Christmas to be honest, they don't get a lot throughout the year though and they both work hard at school so its thoroughly deserved :D

Have ordered a case and card for her too, have to say though I think I will be hiding from the camera, can't imagine what I would look like in HD :lol2: ph34r

Would be great if your daughter could suggest a book :D

Thanks :shades:

Try 'Photography for dummies' or 'Dont take my Picture' - both are written specifically for point and shoot cameras or alternately if you want something more advanced then 'The Complete Photographer by Tom Ang' is a good all rounder.

I ordered from this company and now I am panic stricken, I have just found all kinds of bad information about them   They have my money :-\  Did you get your order ok?

It took a little while to come (not as long as some of the missing Christmas presents I've ordered though) It was packaged well, was exactly what I ordered and a great price.  Just checked back and I ordered 4th November and got on the 14th/15th ish November so I guess not too bad, it seemed a long time when I was paying out a lot of money though.

Problems with any company always generate reports where they may well have lots of very satisfied customers  :-\  I'd probably use them again if they had what I want at the right price.

Did you specify Express Delivery, because if so you should know soon - as it's only supposed to take 1-2 working days. You should also be able to track your order online.

This is just one site I looked at, there is loads of stuff about them on MSE, Av Forums, everywhere, I am so cross at myself as I usually check companies out before ordering  >:D

The problem is Mooching, they haven't despatched it at all, despite it being in stock and them taking my money on the 13th, the online tracking is virtually useless, unless the item has been sent, which it hasn't :-\

Thanks anyway, I would suggest beware!!

Via debit card, don't do credit cards

I think Mooching was going to say that if you pay by credit card, the card company offer some insurance if a company fail to deliver.

Don't get too worried yet though, Simply electronic were OK with my order, although I wouldn't like to guarentee that it will be there for Christmas.  However, with all the will in the world, even the company I work for will post out same day or next but the postage system can't guarentee they wil get it there due to volumn and weather  :-\

Yeah, I know about the CC thing, thanks.   I am trying to cancel my order with them at the moment, emailed them yesterday, haven't got a reply, their delivery said 4-7 days, well they took the order on the 13th and 5 days later they still haven't despatched it, surely if its in stock, they would just send like most other web sites.

Ach well, I have reserved a the next model down at Argos instead, I just hope I get my blinking money back fast, as I need it >:(

That's right; also that PayPal do refunds as well in the event of non-delivery.

I'd suggest you phone them first thing Monday. They might surprise you and send it out Express.

Also found out they are in Hong Kong, so I would doubt very much even if they sent it out Monday it will get here now, especially as a lot of the airports are closed.  Have tried calling them, I gave up after waiting 20 mins in a q.

Just to update, I never got the camera, but I did recieve my money back  :003:

I couldn't get the ST600 in the violet anywhere, that would have been in time for Christmas, so ended up going for the Samsung PL150 which is a lower model but its still a great little camera and DD is delighted with it :D

Mooching, she loves the book, so thanks for the recommendation ;)

hi there, I was just thinking of you today and wondering how it all panned out. Glad she likes the book, and the other camera - much better price too, I imagine!  ;)
