On the compact thing, although I'm a Canon fan one of the girls I was in South America with had a Panasonic Lumix compact and I was really impressed with some of the photos it took. I'm going to get a new compact at some stage soon myself and I'm going to look at that one along with the Canons.

Well iv put this one on my list - https://secure.fujifilm.co.uk/shop/consumer/digital/digital-cameras/advanced-compact/finepix-f100fd-119591/View/119607

If anyone has any info on this one?

Il go look at the Lumix and Cannon now thanks Nicola.  :D

I've got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, great camera for speed shooting and action shots and also takes videos but its not compact which is why I never end up taking it out with me.   If I was looking for a compact, would definitely look at the Lumix ones.

On the lumix ones have a look at the optical zoom and megapixels as this will help with your decision making - the more optical zoom the better for snapping Reuban when he is across the field...  My parents have the 12 zoom which was brill with plenty of functions but it is a bit bgiger than out older model which  is only the 3 zoom.

There is a 5 zoom - Lumix is 10mp

I bought a new camera a fortnight ago. I'd checked out some of the semi-pro review websites and have to say the Panasonic Lumix was definitley getting the best name.

But when I went to Argos they were out of stock and I ended up getting a Samsung NV15. It is 10 megapixels, has face recognition, anti-shake and, most importantly it does some pretty fast, continuous shooting in sports mode which I hope will be good for speeding cockers!

So far I'm pretty happy with my purchase. It was reduced from £140 to £86 so I reckon a pretty reasonable buy.

just seen this - agree with all the comments.  I used to have a Fuji Finepix and a lot of my photo's of Jarv were taken on that and they turned out fine  :D  It was quite bulky and one step down really from a DSLR but  it was great to learn on and use semi-dslr functions with.  Use a 400d now, and still learning with that and believe me there is LOT to learn!

I would look at Lumix, Fuji Finepix and Canon as suggested.

Happy buying!  :D
