Calling all COL Photographers!
« on: February 18, 2009, 10:10:20 PM »
Hey guys,

My Canon 400D has been going wrong for a while now, and as its under guarantee still I took it into Jessops today and they've sent it back to Canon. It's gonna be 4 weeks (at least) until I know whats what. So I am stuck with only my phone for a camera, and that's not good.

So! I've decided to get a Point and Shoot cam. I've been meaning to do this for a while now anyway - as a back up camera, or just a smaller one when I can't take my 400D out (and have to make do with my crappy phone cam).

Now, I realise, with a point and shoot cam, it's NOT going to be my DLSR photo quality. But that said, as most of my photos are landscapes and animals (well, dogs, lol!) I'm after something with a fast shutter speed, for catching my crazy high speed Cocker (yeah right you say, with a point and shoot - however, I'm told is possible, lol) with a good zoom and wide angle lens for landscape.

I'm not sure if its better to get a good cam with a smaller zoom, then buy a lens to make the zoom bigger?

I've been looking at the Canon PowerShots, but I'm not that experienced with cameras to know what's best. So I'm looking for recommendations, please!

Thanks
-Alex

Im not really that sure about point and shoot cameras.  I have a Nikon D70, it can be full auto or full manual, or a bit of both!  Excellent camera, no real problems with it.  Have tried friend's point and shoot, and in all honesty I would much rather just have my D70 on full auto for that sort of stuff.  Still, it is a DSLR and so a bit more than a pocketfull to carry, but I have one of those small Crumpler bags for it, so I don't really notice it any more.  More than can be said of carrying the tripod!

There is a new Fuji ZD something or other that is top spec and rivals some of the features of the DSLRs, I really have to go and do some study but if you are still looking tomorrow I will have a look and see if I can track it down for you.

We have a Finepix f100d as a back up to our Canon DSLRs and that seems to cope very nicely.

We bought a new compact about a month ago as I wanted something more portable than the 50D for when we go to New York in March or just for taking out and about and for videos etc. I looked at quite a few and read a lot of reviews and narrowed it down to the Panasonic TZ5 and the Canon Powershot SX110 IS. In the end I went for the Canon as it has more manual control than the Panasonic, you can use it fully manual which is unusual in a compact. It has a 10x zoom which is great and a big, clear screen for viewing the photos. The other deciding factor for me other than the manual control was the lens quality - Canon manufactured lenses are better quality than the Leica *approved*  lenses used by Panasonic - there's a big difference in a Leica lens and a Leica approved one.

As you're talking about getting a point and shoot compact camera here you can't add a lens to increase the zoom range - only SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses ;)

Hi ya ..It all depends HOW much you wont to spend on a camera...We have also got the canon350d for far better pictchure(like you have said)...That is the wifes camera...I my self use a my cam corder for fast shots that one is the sony HDavchd with 120gb(HD)...Once down loaded i can take stills of in HI HD...(worth knowing)...Getting back to the point...As you are aware the canon is a fairly big camera...To get takeing around with you all the time...So the wife wonted a nice little camera that will also do as the same as her Canon350d...The camera i got her that does the job is the Panasonic Lumix Tz5 and doubles up as a cam corder..It fixs in her hand bag very nicely..I got this one of E.Bay after staying up hafe the night to get to bid for it...At a knock down price of 140 pounds...But if you shop around on the internet you can still get a good price for one....Chris

Thanks for all the replys guys! I'm STILL looking, so feel free to add if you haven't done already (I need as meny ideas and comments/reviews as I can get from you all, hehe).

Nicola, the Canon Powershot SX110 IS is one of those on my list, which I've been looking at. What is it like for fast doggy shots? Any good? Or do use just leave that to your SLR?

Only SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses? That's what I thought! Then my freind buys a Powershot (its one of the bigger ones with those LCD screen that swings round), as she didn't want a SLR (too big for her) and she's got these small lenses too. I'll have to ask her about it... Maybe there for somthing else? ph34r

CarolineL, what number is it?

Nicola, here we are! (another Powershot I was looking at tonight - the G10 - I knew I'd seen lens for it)

However, the G10 is a bit much, I don't have that kind of money to spend on a back up camera. When I may need to spend some on my 400D as of yet...  *sighs*

Canon manufacture their own lenses although you can buy other lenses with Canon compatible mounts. Leica made lenses are fantastic though which is the main reason why Leica cameras are so expensive!

Those aren't lenses they're lens converters - the lens doesn't come off the G10 or the Powershot cameras, the converter goes over the top of it to increase the range/versatility of the existing lens, not to replace it ;)  The G10 is a really fantastic camera, we looked at it but it was still a bit bigger than we were looking for.

Oh yes, I knew you just fit it on over the top on the non-SLRs (sorry, my bad for not explaining what I meat), but, yes, as you said, it does make the ranger bigger. And that's what I meant, lol.

Yes, the G10 is bigger than what I wanted as well. And, it's almost as much as another SLR! Lol.

Can I ask, your SX110 IS, what is it like for moving doggy shots? Any good? Or do you just leave that to your SLR?

Thanks again,
-Alex

I'd go for the Canon Powershot A590 IS.  It's relatively cheap at £98, and has Image Stabilisation with an 8 megapixel sensor, which is quite ample.

As you already have a DSLR I wouldn't pay out too much for a compact.  You can get it here.  http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=1024472
