Possessive with Sticks
« on: March 26, 2021, 03:54:53 PM »
I have a 8 month old working cocker spaniel and we are having issues with her on walks. Her recall since we started taking her outside after her jabs was amazing. She'd always return when called. Recently however she has started to love sticks and every now and then would chose one and turn possessive with it. Her heckles would go up and she'd stay far away from myself and partner. She would not come near us no matter what we tried (treats, ball throws, calling, whistle, staying still, ignoring her etc).

It's like her mind switches off and she forgets all her training once she's decided the stick is hers. This has gotten progressively worse where nearly every walk she turns possessive with a stick and sometimes it can take over 45 mins to either get it off her or for her to finally drop it. It is also turning dangerous now where we feel we can't take her off the lead as she will not return to us.

Please can anyone offer help and guidance on what we can do to improve this as nothing we have tried has worked and there doesn't seem to be any help online for this specific issue.
