Scanning a document
« on: October 04, 2006, 09:23:12 PM »
Can I scan a document and then edit it? I have only scanned photos which I save as jpeg. What do I have to do to get a scanned document saved into a Word format, or is it not possible?

It depends what sort of scanner you have.  The only way is to actually scan the document and then when it comes up with the save as option see if it lets you save it as a Word document.  Most modern scanner will only save as jpeg or adobe as the whole pont is to scan and not alter.

Sorry, that's not much help but I had the same problem and that's what I did with my new scanner.  That was when my 60wpm came in handy!!!

I have an Epsom Stylus photo RX620 (scanner/printer) bought early this year. I have the option to save as: BITMAP, JPEG, multi-TIFF, PDF or TIFF. Only JPEG means anything to me as I know thats what I have to save my scanned photos in to put on COL :005:. So it can't be done then?  :-\

i'm not an expert, but i don't think you can edit a scanned document. I think you can alter size, light etc, but def not change words in text.

Yes, sorry I forgot all the other formats.  None of those can be edited though so I was partly correct (quite unusual for me  :005: ).

Sorry you didn't get the answer you wanted but I hope it helped anyway.

I've just checked with my computer whizz OH. He says is it a picture or a text document? if it's a text doc, and if you have OCR (text recognition software) you can then edit the document!   If it's a picture you might be able to edit it in photo editing software.

Now i'm even more confused!!

OCR - Optical Character Recognition is supplied with many scanners, it is able to recognise text  and convert it into a format that can be edited in word.

If you have an HP scanner you will need to use 'Scan Document' in the HP Director software instead of 'Scan Picture'

It's an ordinary typed letter that I want to scan and save to edit on the pc. I only have a hard copy so it's neither a picture or a text document at the moment.

The boss says that OCR should work for you then once you have scanned in your document.

Good Luck!!

You can download a free OCR software application here, which might be worth a go; or there is another one here  ;)

You don't always get good results with OCR software - I've had very mixed results when I've tried so if it's just a letter, you may be better off just copy typing it into Word as it probably wouldn't take you any longer than fiddling with OCR :005:

Some OCRs are better than others but your right --- I find they make common mistakes though as I often get manuscripts in that have been scanned so a pattern emerges and its easier to look for whats wrong
