That's giving me a bit more food for thought 

Phil your flickr pics are very impressive    and Jaspers Mum thanks as I'd like to take some action shots (horses) so perhaps the 350D would be a better option

If I could do half as well as you I'd be satisfied 

Thanks to all of you for your very helpful advice    I think I'll keep my eyes open for  a Canon, either a 350 or 400 coming up cheap enough -
