Title: Good News From Optigen
Post by: Jane S on June 01, 2005, 09:36:03 AM
Optigen have announced that they have now identified the gene which causes canine prcd-PRA in a number of breeds so their DNA test is now a mutation gene test not a marker gene test. They have retested around 400 ECS test results using the marker gene & new mutation gene tests & have not found any difference in the results meaning the improved marker gene test was accurate for English Cockers. More info on Optigen's site HERE (http://www.optigen.com/). The price for using the new mutation test has also been reduced by 25% from June 1 so more good news for breeders :)

They don't have to take place in a particular place Gilly ;) Optigen often run "satellite" 20/20 clinics via VHL (their Dutch agent) so anyone in Europe can take part as long as the blood samples arrive at VHL within the specified time limit.

That's great news. Here's hoping next year we will hear the same sort of news for FN

Do you know whether the Cocker Club are going to hold a directory of Optigen results? (Obviously at owners permission)???

I think its great news and hopefully it might encourage a few more sceptical breeders to have their dogs tested ;)  Disney is being done in a few months so its great timing for me :D

I hope this will be the next step & much preferable to the way results are currently being collated & listed on some breeders' personal websites. It would be great if the KC also acknowledged the test now it is a mutation test so that results appear on registration certificates & in the BRS like clinical eye test results.

Jane

I see that Sandy Platt (Charbonnel Cockers) is planning to maintain a register for Optigen Clear (A1) dogs and she is donating the funds raised to the European FN Fund for research into FN, I just think there should be a more "professional" way in which the list could be maintained, and the first place people would look for the information would be the parent club, or indeed the KC. Any idea how we can find out what is likely to happen? I have nothing against the EFNF and think it would be a great way to raise money, just think the Cocker Club should take some responsibility and lead the way.

I know there is an additional charge for some countries to have their results sent to their breed club or Kennel Club by OptiGen...so perhaps we shouldn't go down this "automatic" route, but I hope the Cocker Club will be willing to hold a list?

** original post modified to say the register will actually be maintained by Sandy on her personal Website, and is in no way related to the EFNF other than the monies raised going to this much needy cause, sorry for the misunderstanding **

As I understand it, the KC won't consider publishing DNA test results unless they come through the AHT but whether this might change now the Optigen test is a mutation test, I don't know. Re the Cocker Club, last I heard a list of Optigen results would be considered for inclusion in the annual Welfare Report as long as there were at least 20 dogs tested. This shouldn't be a problem as I think well over 40 UK dogs have now been Optigen tested (although not all owners may want results published of course). I imagine a copy of the relevant Optigen email/letter would be needed before publication to ensure accuracy. Hopefully, more info will be available soon.

Just had confirmation from Penny Lester:

"Hello Louise
The Cocker Club are starting a Optigen list in the 2006 summary as there seems to be a lot more breeders having it done and of course it will be free! I know you have had some of your dogs done so send me a copy please.
Perhaps you will spread this amongst other breeders who have had their dogs tested
Many thanks
Penny"

Please circulate!

Thanks

Good news Louise :)

Also before this thread is put to bed, just a clarification about Sandy's initiative to list A1 Optigen results on her own website - this isn't being organised by the EFNF but by Sandy personally with monies raised going to the fund. The aim is to help breeders identify clear dogs & raise the profile of Optigen testing generally to encourage others to test their dogs.

Jane

I am really pleased to see that you have clarified the situation, it is very clear on Sandy's website that she is doing it the way you have said and it is good to let people know that she is so keen to improve our dogs and we should all be grateful for what she is doing with the FN fund.

Jane I had misunderstood this originally and had though it was going to be a register maintained by the EFNF but it is actually on Sandy's personal site, sorry if anyone also misunderstood after reading my post but hopefully this matter has now been clarified, I have amended my original post to this effect.
