I have been told that if I breed my black and white bitch with a black there is an increased risk of hip dysplasia. Can anyone confirm/reject and/or point me in the direction of information on this, please?

I'm curious to know why you want to breed a solid with a multi? I didn't think it was the done thing but I am by no means an expert :) not sure on the hip dysplasia front but in sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon xx

Are the dogs you are intending to breed hip scored?

Is your bitch a show or working type? If working, solid to parti combinations are common. Less so with show types. However, never heard anything relating to increased risk of HD in either colour. Mismarked pups (for the show ring) maybe, but that's all?

Historically there were thought to be more cases of HD in solid Cockers (this was based on info from other countries where hip scoring is more common than here) In the UK, not enough Cockers have been hipscored to say whether HD is more common in one colour over another - I have seen some horrendous scores in solids but have also seen the same in particolours. If you are considering breeding and are worried about HD, then you should ensure both parents are hip scored and ideally come from a line of previously scored ancestors (hip scores taken in isolation don't tend to mean that much)

Neither are hip scored. The solid is black and very handsome and I thought would be good with my very pretty white and black bitch. Both are show.

Looks aren't a good enough reason to breed a dog - everyone thinks their own dog is gorgeous! You might want to have a look at the thread below; as well as hip scoring, Cockers should always be DNA tested for PRA (hereditary eye disease) and FN (hereditary kidney disease) as well as having an annual clinical eye test performed by a specialist veterinary opthalmologist (a list is available from the BVA) before breeding from them is even considered:

When you breed show types solid and parti should not be bred together as you risk having mis marked puppies that cannot be shown on colour alone, they should be bred for show whether you show or not :-\.
