Title: Bayley
Post by: Jane S on January 19, 2006, 04:53:49 PM
Bayley has been with us for 4 weeks now and we think he is ready to move on to someone who can either offer him a permanent home or a long term foster where his training can be continued. He is a 2 year old Working Cocker (undocked) and has been neutered and vaccinated. He has had a bad start to his life through no fault of his own and really deserves someone who will give him the chance he deserves (you can read some of his past history HERE (http://cockersonline.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=14033)). He has already made a lot of progress in the weeks he’s been with us and will make a wonderful companion for someone with the time, energy and commitment to devote to him. He is housetrained and crate trained, he does not chew things he shouldn’t and is happy to be left alone for reasonable periods. We think he would be better living in a home with another dog or dog(s) as he has learned a lot from living with our 6 Cockers. He is not at the moment entirely comfortable with older males but is quite happy for our girls to boss him about and also seems to enjoy the company of young, neutered dogs. He can be rather “amorous” with bitches (whether neutered or not) but this will almost certainly lessen as the neutering takes effect (he was only “done” just before Christmas). He is known to be ok with cats and lived happily with a cat in his previous home. He is a very bouncy dog with endless energy so would not suit a home with small children as he could easily knock them over. He is slowly learning not to jump up but this will take time as when he’s excited, he just can’t stop himself from bouncing like Tigger! He loves to run and chase a ball endlessly – you will get tired of this game long before he does   He is very toy and treat orientated which helps with his training. Surprisingly for such a bouncy dog, he takes treats very gently (after being told to sit of course). He has a healthy appetite and is doing well on Nutro Lamb & Rice which has no artificial additives. A highly processed supermarket food with lots of additives would not suit such a lively dog and could make him overly “hyper”.

Bayley’s new owner should be confident and ideally be experienced with active dogs such as Working Cockers or Springers or understand what these dogs need in terms of mental stimulation & training. He is a very strong, fit dog and will need an owner with similar attributes :D NILIF training is working well with him so this will need to be continued. He would also probably do well at agility or flyball so an owner with an interest in such activities would be ideal. He still has some “issues” that need continuing work – he has not been lead trained so pulls very hard, his recall is not good when there are distractions (such as birds or squirrels!) and he is not comfortable meeting dogs he does not know when on the lead. He seems to have got over his fear-barking at people he doesn’t know and is now greeting visitors to our home with enthusiasm (rather too much sometimes!). For a dog who has been undersocialised and abused, he is doing remarkably well and has so much to offer to someone who can give him the kind of home he needs.

If anyone thinks they can offer him a home or long term fostering, please contact HWAR (Alison on 01495 273473 or Carol on 01885 482967) or me via PM or email (jane@cockersonline.co.uk)

Please feel free to crosspost this to other forums, particularly if any of you are members of agility forums or similar :)

Jane, I have sent you a pm with my contact phone numbers and I would like to talk more about his issues and see if we can find any common ground.Doug is usually fine if he meets another dog indoors in a calm and nuetral setting and if this is ok then he seems to get on with other cockers very well.

I know it's uncanny isn't it? I don't know much about his origins except he came from S Wales and was originally bought to work and is thought to be 2 years old (no papers with a date of birth on) There are some well-known Working Cocker breeders in S Wales but whether he came from one of those is anyone's guess. He's a striking looking dog being so tall & very racy in build, not like our stocky show Cockers

he is lovely and leggy (and looks very athletic!) -  there are some very well known welsh working cocker lines - wernffrwd and maesydderwen are a couple - that bilbo and bailey very well be related to.

whatever lines they're from, they are both gorgeous boys, and i hope it all works out as well for bailey as it has for bilbo :)

well if he can jump like my boy then someone will getting a cracking agility dog, we have our first show tomorrow and because he's tall he is jumping the new large height so up against the collies, he is good its me that has the problems.
Good luck to anyone thinking of taking on this boy :D

Oh yes, he sure can jump  He even jumps when he's running - he'll be chasing after a ball and suddenly he will be four feet off the ground at least if not higher (like one of those African antelopes). Good luck to you and Bilbo with your agility show :D

If this guy can get on with my two he is what I'm looking for as I want a dog to start agility with.
Of course he will have to meet with the approval of Doug and Ollie if he is to come and start jumping for his supper at my house.
We will see.
I'm calling Jane tonight for more details.

Wondering how arrangements are going for Bayley - is there any chance of a meeting with your dogs Mark? It sounds like just the home Bayley is looking for if he would settle in.  :)

Good luck little man and a million thanks to Jane for helping Bayley in his hour of need and for helping him to enjoy a bit more of a normal life. His story is already quite a saga for such a youngster. My fingers are firmly crossed for him.

Have spoken to Alison at Hwar about Bayley and we got cut off.  :(
The general gist is that Alison is going to talk with the centre manager to see if we can get bayley to York or at least somewhere inbetween to meet with my two.
I think the place that would be best is a meeting at my house over a calm cup of tea and I have offered to pay travel costs to get him here.
Alison seems to think that It might be good If Jane, being someone who he has learned to trust acompanies him but I know this is a lot to ask.
Would really like to give this fella a go and they have my number so I guess I'll just wait and see what the rescue come up with.

I doubt it will be Sarah as she lives in Kent!! Shame though as she doesn't mind travelling as long as her petrol is paid for. However a triangle from Kent to Gloucestershire (where Bayley is) to York would probably be asking a bit much of anyone!!

I doubt very much we will be able to get anyone to drive all the way to York (we will try our best of course), but a meeting half way is probably not out of the question.....the rescue consists of merely a few volunteers - we are not a rescue with people employed etc!! Most of us have full time jobs and our own families to look after.  We do however do our best for our dogs and we commit ourselves to their care for their lifetime.  :)

Fingers crossed we can sort something out.

The problem is Helen that this weekend coming is no good for me, we have a real busy time at work and my boss says I can't get time off.
I think I need to be around at all times when he arrives to keep an eye on proceedeings so I have suggested the early part of the week after.
We will continue to try and sort it out.
I'll phone Alison today.

Mark, our phone line is playing up at the moment so I'm only getting online intermittently. If you or Alison need to contact me, then you have my number which will be diverted to my mobile at the moment until BT fix things. I've emailed Alison and said that Andrew could probably help taking Bayley at least half the way or maybe even all the way but it would have to be a weekend, possibly next weekend (Feb 5th/6th). I would much rather one of us was present if poss - it will make it easier for Bayley after all he's been through.

Jane thanks for your kind offer, It would be great if one or both of you could accompany him.
Weekends are when I am busiest at work but i will try and phone my boss to see if it is possible to take some holiday over that weekend.
Is there no way you could do mid week? Sorry to be a pain, jobs are a real pain in the backside but unfortunately a neccesary evil.
I'll phone work now to check it out.

No sorry Mark, mid-week is out for us - I don't have access to a car during the week and Andrew is at his busy time of year so no chance of being able to take a day off during the week at the mo. I'm sure something can be worked out though it might take a while :D

As i said I can't get hold of my boss until tomorrow but if i can get time off that weekend  which would be the 4th and 5th of february would that be good for you?
I have a comfortable spare room if you fancied a weekend in York. It's very nice this time of year you know.
This would give it a great chance of success.
Failing that I could meet you half way, where ever that maybe, but then if it doesn't work we'd have to have a plan.
let me know what you think.

Yes that weekend would be ok (nothing in the diary anyway :)) That's very kind of you to offer to put us up but with our own doggies to look after, planning even a night away requires military planning and finding a dog sitter  I've already told Alison that if it doesn't work out with you, we will have Bayley back as we don't want him being passed from pillar to post :)

He's doing fine :) He's now rubbing along quite happily with our older boy, something I didn't think would happen so it just shows that sometimes it takes a while for dogs to accept each other. He's still a little wary of tall men - I had friends visit this morning and he was fine with the wife but got a bit upset when the husband (very big & tall) put his hand out (I had actually asked him not to do this!) He soon settled though & was taking biscuits from Martin five minutes later ;) He's now resting after a mad play session with Jasper (Sage's brother who was visiting too)) - don't suppose he'll be resting for long as his internal clock will be reminding him it's tea time soon

It's a good job I'm vertically challenged then :D   I'm only 5ft 5 and a half ( although I do tell people I'm 5ft 6)
Does he react at the doorway or is it towards people anywhere?
Could you let me know as much about his likes and dislikes, habits etc as possible?
What size crate is he in? Do you want to sell me the one he has got if all goes according to plan?
