Title: Natural instinct dog food
Post by: jak3 on July 30, 2012, 04:33:13 PM
Iv seen alot on this forum about natural instinct dog food and am looking to try Alfie on it, just have a couple of questions, is the consistency like wet dog food? I see on there website it has a description of chicken and bone, is this big lumps of bone, is it mainly chicken or mainly bone? I may be mis reading it totally but just wanting to check.
Also Alfie is 8months would he be on the puppy ones still, the food he is on just know is junior but I see they are either puppy or adult?

Thanks everyone!

Hi

It is the consistency of finely ground, almost mashed up, mince. The bone is ground down into small pieces with the meat, it's not like big lumps of bone or anything. Here are some pics

I think they advise switching to adult at 9 months.

i am switching to this i think it will be here tomorrow. thanks for those piccies i was wondering what it would look like to. if i where you i would go with the adult saving him the change of food but thats just my opinion whatever you decide it is a brilliant food so you cant go far wrong  :D

The pictures are great  :D I have used Natural Instinct with mine and you should be fine going straight onto adult. Someone else has posted on the forum about NI saying they had only produced a puppy formula because people expected it  :dunno: and there isn't much difference between the puppy and adult formulas in any case. I have bought some of the working chicken for my boys as it is on such a great offer at the minute. They are not working dogs but others have used it and they seem to be thriving on it  ;)

I was going to ask that about the working food, Alfie is a working cocker but is a pet does not work is there much difference with the food ? Is it mainly who are out working all day?

The main difference is it is VAT free and has added vitamin C, so better for your pocket.

Exactly ;) Mine aren't working Cockers, far from it in fact  :005: They actually seem to prefer the working formulas. Not sure why though?

Is there any flavours that anyone would recommend in particular that went down well?

Bingley loves the working beef one, I think it has tripe in it. He likes all of them though. Ordered some of the duck to try, should be coming tomorrow.

All of them  :005: I think the beef is the favourite with ours too :luv: Stick with one flavour at a time though until you know your dog can tolerate it. You can then introduce something else.

The food he is on just know is turkey flavour so maybe try the chicken as might be nearest thing to it and see how he goes, I noticed on the web site they sell play bones are they any good, he has never had a proper bone before so don't want to introduce to much at once.

Ok iv ordered 5 packets of the working chicken, 5kg which if I'm working it out correct should last around ten days does that seem right? How long usually does it take for delivery? Am I best just switching straight to it or mixing gradual with the dry food he is on just know?

I ordered my monthly supply yesterday lunchtime and it arrived about an hour ago.

They only delivery Tuesday-Friday and it;s usually next day (if you order before 2.30 i think).
You can introduce it slowly over a couple of days, mixing with their current food. They have advice on their website about that, and there's lots of threads on here about switching foods.

Do keep in mind though that you can only keep it in the fridge for 4 days once defrosted, so if you are slowly switching there is a chance you may have to throw out a tub before you've finished it, IYSWIM.
Good luck! Hope you get on well with it.

Bingley's having duck tonight.

cut it in half while frozen, leave half in the freezer and defrost half a tub in a different tub in the fridge.

Until she's bigger and needs more it might be easier to order the smaller tubs.

Ok I got a load of the working chicken food but I'm surprised that Alfie hasn't taken to it, first couple of days when I mixed it with his dry food he ate it but wasn't overly interested in it and now when I put it out on his own he won't touch it, I think it's because it's raw he has never had raw meat but loves cooked meats , can the natural instinct food be cooked at all ? I now it probably can't but just thought would ask to save me having to throw it all out. Thanks.

You could lightly brown it in a pan, or warm it in the microwave or with some hot water.
If he takes to it the gradually reduce the 'cooking' :)

Be careful though, they warn on their website the bone can become brittle and potentially cause problem if cooked. If you flash fry it though I'm not sure that would be a problem.

You shouldn't cook raw bone food.

Tali has tried a few but his favourite and the one he does well on is Tripe and Turkey.

I will try it in the microwave, he is fast becoming a very fussy dog which I'm wanting to avoid! He just goes up to it and has a sniff and walks away am I best to just not offer him anything else and hope he will eventually eat it or change to something else? Thanks for the advice

Bingley has days like this. He definitely prefers some flavours to others. If he does this i take it up and put it in the fridge, and put it back down in an hour or two. He always eats it in the end!
