Title: Salmon trimmings

Max had been raw fed for a couple of months now and we are both very happy with it. Today I bought a pack of salmon trimmings thinking raw fish would be a nice treat. However just seen on a facebook page I am on that you shouldn't feed raw salmon due to poisoning. Do any of you raw feeders give these or should I just cook them and give as a meal instead? I would not give it raw to Bob.... i think it better to be safe that sorry

I think (but I'm not absolutely sure) that salmon poisoning only occurs in wild caught salmon and possibly only in the USA/Canada. When the salmon come back from the sea and swim up freshwater rivers to their breeding grounds they may become infected with a particular parasite. It's the parasite that causes the poisoning if an infected fish is caught and then fed fresh and raw.

I don't think it's found in UK farmed salmon, but I'm not completely sure as there seems to be quite a bit of conflicting advice on the internet.

I've fed raw sprats and raw trout before but always ones that have been frozen, not fresh.

I'm with Elaine on this one....I've never ever heard of any cases in the UK in farmed salmon.

I give Jarv cooked salmon whenever we have it - he's not keen on sashimi (unlike me!   :shades: )

Thanks, it is currently in freezer. Haven't decided whether to risk it raw or cook yet. Probably will stick to other fish in future!!

Mine have salmon trimmings.
On the Facebook page there are some documents and I spent ages researching the potential effects of salmon poisoning and have decided if its fit for human consumption, and been frozen as described in those links on that page then I'm comfortable feeding it.

Like many things raw feeding involves choice, and this is one of them; my advice is research research research and make a decision that you are comfortable with. :)

Darwin has had cooked salmon as left over scrapes, but I would be very cautions of raw salmon, I love all fish, but never raw and also my son developed as salmon allergy as a toddler (whilst we lived in the US)

I totally agree you have to make up your own mind, and if you are happy with it then that's fine
i have chosen not to feed salmon as there are many other fish he can have,

It's still in freezer at the moment. Have decided to cook it and won't be buying in future. Am sure it would probably be fine but not going to take the risk when there is plenty of other meat/fish he can have. Thanks for all your opinions.
