Hi, I'm in the process of hopefully adopting a 4 year old golden cocker - Molly. She came for a visit yesterday and met my other dog (beagle), and let her see my rabbits in their pen. All went very well . She loved rolling round on the grass in my garden :D
I'm having her for a sleepover tonight to see how she is with my cat and niece, with a view to making it a permanent move at the weekend, if all goes ok.
I'm a newbie cocker owner, so if anyone has any tips I'd be very grateful . Everything iv read makes me think that they are very much like beagles? I.e mischievous, food oriented, very friendly little monsters lol.

hi there :D
No experience of beagles other
than going "ahhh" when I see one :luv:
but I think your comparison sounds
about right... you have also found
that rolling about is good fun for them
(Especially in something stinky :005:)
They are hairy hooligans so get your
grooming gear ready!
Hope all goes well for your sleepover,
as Maddy says "let us know"

Hi welcome to COL., as previously stated it is a very addictive, helpful and friendly forum. Good luck with the sleepover hope all goes well. We are Gwyneth and Colin and we are owned by a seven year old rescue ex-breeding bitch. Megan is our first Cocker and Megan has been with us now two years in September. She has become a loving, loyal and loony cocker and we love her more than words can say and the love she gives us is tremendous.

We rescued an ex breeding bitch almost 6 years ago, she was just turned 3 when we got her and had had three litters. The last litter had ingrowing eyelashes so they couldn't breed from her again so were looking to "get shut".
She was in a terrible state, 19kg, belly touching floor, filthy and smelly but so cute. Sadly we only had her 3 1/2 years before she died of cirhhosis of the liver, but how great those three years were. When she arrived she wasn't house trained, had never seen stairs and didn't know how to play.
We quickly got her weight down to 12kg and taught her how to enjoy life, but as I said, sadly she did not live long enough. Her name was Fudge, a gorgeous chocolate and tan girl, who was such a cute little baby.

Thanks for the lovely welcome guys. :D its been an exciting day so far! Molly loves my garden, we've been playing chase the ball. Lovely seeing her tearing round, she's not lived with a garden before!
Megan my beagle has been great with her, but sort of knew she would. Think the pair of them will drive me daft finding the smelliest things to find to roll in hehe!
She was so good in the car. Just lay in the back, no noise at all while I drove home.
Pepsi (my cat) not too impressed, but she didn't lunge at him or try to bite him, and he's now taken himself off upstairs to bed!
Molly is currently fast asleep. Think things are going to work out just fine.
I'll try to work out how to post a pic :D
-
I do hope it works out for you all. Hoping for pics soon.
-
we would love to see a pic of her and your beagle too :luv: :luv:
-
Beagle & a cocker - yep you're mad :005:
I have a friend who has 3 beagles & now a working cocker, I think regarding greed & stubbornness they are very similar, sounds like you're all going to have a great time
-
Sounds like it went really well :D i shall look forward to seeing pictures of your two gorgeous girls :luv: :luv:

Beagle was up there in the top 3 of my short list prior to getting Posie (Working Cocker) but I was put off by people telling me that they have a tendency to wander off if they get a scent. What I've seen from a dog walking friend is exactly that and we often see some in the park but the owners are worried about letting them off the lead because of previous experiences. I know every dog is different though and I hope yours is a better than that, because...
...you're going to have your hands full with a Worker. In the nicest possible way, of course.
What you should know going into this is that they are very intelligent and can be stubborn as well as mischievous. Expect the pair to wander off together, especially if you take them to some woods.
Posie is as loyal and loving a dog as I've ever known, but also high maintenance. If we don't keep that little brain working whenever she's awake, we're in for a noisy time.
And yes; having a Cocker will take over your life, if only because of this place. You'll find whole mornings melt away - and your dogs won't make exceptions. ;-)
Good luck with the adoption. I'm sure you'll love every moment.
I have to go now: Posie is "telling" me its time to go for a walk. :005:

Hi and welcome to COL!
I am Uli and have Paula, a solid black show type bitch of 3 1/2 years. Molly seems to have found an ideal place to live with you, a Beagle, a cat, rabbits and a garden. Paula comes with me to my Düsseldorf office every day and she has fallen in love with a Beagle pup in the neighbourhood. Would love to see pics of your doggies...

Well the sleepover went perfect! Took her back yesterday afternoon. But going back tomorrow, to bring her home!! iv got 3 days off work after today, so will be great to settle her in
and make sure the rest of mini zoo happy.
You're right about beagles going deaf once they get a scent. Megan's pretty good at recall, (we got to silver in the good citizen award) so long as nothing else has caught her attention lol! I normally keep her on a long line though, just to make sure I don't lose her (too many beagles go missing for my comfort), unless we're at the beach, and then she gets a proper free run - not seen any beach bunnies :005:
Oohh I wonder if Molly has even been to the beach?? Really excited about bringing her home! She just loved the garden! And rolling round on the grass! Lovely and very funny to watch lol.
From her photo, do you all think she is a worker? I was wondering that myself, but I'm a complete novice about it.
This site is lovely btw, all very friendly, very glad iv found it! I'll post more pics soon!
-
Hurray :dance04:that sounds

Yes she does look like a worker,
a very pretty worker too :luv:

Hi all, thought I'd give a quick update on Molly's progress.
She's settled in so well, feels like she's been here a lot longer than 5 weeks! Don't think her tailas stopped wagging! We've had to do some work with her walking ona lead - don't think she was trained how to walk on one in previous home. Wants to pull me as fast as she can in the direction she wants to go. So its been a case of start, stop, rewind, go forward q1 step and repeat :005: :005:
But she's sorta learning to walk by my side... Eventually we'll get there I know.
Also had to teach her what her name is, as she didn't seem to recognise it.
She's such a cracking little dog though, love watching her exploring the new places iv been taking her to. She's even got some muscles on her legs now!
She's coped with a completly New routine so well! Love her to bits already :luv:
