Title: Differing shades of orange in roan Cockers
Post by: jaybee on September 02, 2012, 08:06:12 PM
Mods - apologies if this is in the wrong section, not sure where to put it.

I've noticed that parts of Bingley's coat are becoming very dark. He has a spot around his tail and one up near his neck that are much darker than the rest of him. I had a look online and saw a few references to 'red roan', is this different to orange roan or are they just one and the same? Other areas of him are much lighter and more 'orange'. Is it fairly usual to see deep red/almost liver colours on an orange roan? Just curious more than anything!

My friend bought an orange roan at the same time as I bought Darcey. She was massively darker than Darce lthpugh over time Darceys colouring has come out more. The tone is the same but my friends dog is much darker in density. IYSWIM.

Of course Karen, that's obviously the logical explanation for it! Didn't think of that in my Sunday evening stupidity  :lol2:

My Bramble who is orange roan, is so orange she nearly looks solid gold, but then her mum, my Inca is the same.  If you put Summer, also orange, next to her they look completely different colours, Summer looks almost white as her roan is very light and she doesn't have any solid patches on her

Red roan is a term used mainly by breeders out side of the UK.

Orange roan and Liver roan can vary enormously in both depth and shade but are still registered as Orange or Liver as the option of using the term " light " and " Dark " has been removed when registering puppies.

I was going to ask the same question! Archie has also recently started to change colour. He is quite a white roan but his orangy bits are very orange. Now though, he too has the red tinge under is neck as well as in his armpits. The fur between his toes is much more liver than orange - almost chocolate  :shades:

That reddish colour between his toes looks like saliva/sweat staining, the feet are a common place for dogs to lick/chew and they also have sweat glands on their paw pads. It's the same as the reddish marks you often see around the eyes and mouth on white dogs.

I thought it was a guinea pig on first glance :005:

My aunty has an orange roan and he has gone darker as he has got older... i suppose it's just variations like you can get light and dark blues and very pale golden/red solids etc

The bit at the base of Lady's tail is really dark orange almost bordering on liver in colour. The majority of her tail (docked) is the same rich colouring but at the end is white! The rest of her is light orange roan.

Make the most of the years when they're young and the orange colour is at it's most vibrant as in most orange roans it will become paler as they get older (Emma xx I think your auntie's dog may be an exception to that). William is 8 now and his ears are more pale gold than orange, even though they've never been clipped.

Agree with Nicola, that the reddish colour between the toes is saliva or sweat staining.

Jinley has developed a new shade across her shoulders over the past few weeks!  Almost like a blonde colour!!  It is wonderful that they keep changing isnt it?

Hope you have a fun day with Pearly.
