Sorry I'm new to this forum - I have been reading it for the past few months but haven't posted yet. Our beautiful Ringo is 6 months old and as you can see from the picture rather cute. However, because of his unusual colouring people keep telling me he's a springer (he's pretty big too, just over 16 inches at 6 months old... so do you reckon I have a springer more than a cocker or a sprocker? It's silly but I'm getting awfully upset about it, I've wanted a cocker since I'm a child and although we love it dearly and wouldn't change him for the world it would be nice to know what breed he is exactly. The lady we got him from said they were larger scale working cockers

Black and white cockers are not that common (I should know, I've wanted the right one for ages ;)) but they are certainly within the colour palette of cockers, so nothing unusual there. Your boy is absolutely gorgeous but whether or not he's a full working cocker is difficult to tell from just one photo. What information have you got on his pedigree? I'm sure someone would be able to give you a definitive answer if you post his pedigree on here.
-
Thanks for your message but he is not a pedigree puppy. Mum and dad certainly look more working cockers than springers, their adult size is the same size as Ringo is now. I will try to upload a few more pics.
-
I'd say cocker too. our first cocker was a black and white.
-
Not sure but Ringo is just :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv:
-
Definitely looks like a black and white cocker to me, and a gorgeous one at that! :luv: :luv:
-
Whatever he is, he is :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv: Only way you can guarantee you are buying/rehoming a specific breed is to see it's KC registration.
-
Looks like a cocker to me. My springer had more feathers and shorter ears. Lila (working cocker) is 16inches at 6months. He is lovely :luv: :luv: :luv:
-
Thank you all, yes he is so handsome and so good and kind with the kids :luv: I will try to post some more recent pics tomorrow
-
He does look like a working cocker to me, does he have a very thick coat and feathering?
-
I disagree - I think sprocker ;)
-
yes, very thick coat and some feathering. see more piccies.

thanks Helen, she's lovely and yes very much like Ringo

She's a lovely dog as is Ringo :luv: He could be well be full working cocker but my gut instinct thinks a little springer in there. I would hazzard a guess that in an awful lot of working cocker lines over the decades springers have been bred in - it could be that this breeders 'larger' lines are just throwing back with the larger size and colouring?
-
I am certainly no expert but would say he's part Springer. He's gorgeous, whatever he is!
-
I can see springer in him more than cocker, but whatever he is, he is lovely!!!
Sorry Montsmum, I seem to have practically echoed your words, quite unconsciously! :embarassed:
-
Gotta disagree- am seeing a lot of worker there- he is very very similar to my Fred at that age (http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh298/lisalh1/Fred/PICT0031copy.jpg)
-
We had a springer for over 14 years and would definately say part springer in there.
-
I can't really help with what he is but I would say that lots of people who meet my Jasper automatically assume he's a young springer because of his colouring (he's actually a black and white ticked show cocker). I've even had someone argue with me that his breeder must have lied to us (wish I'd had his 6 generation pedigree certificate to hand on that day!!)

Jasper is absolutely gorgeous, so unique :luv: definately nothing like a springer though.

This is my working cocker boy wisp. He is always being mistaken for a springer (even my vet said he was a lovely springer with very unusual markings ph34r erm, that's because he's a cocker :005: )
Whatever your boy turns out to be he is :luv: :luv:

I have both a cocker and a springer, and although I think I see some springer in there, we meet a working cocker, Dougal, on our walks sometimes who is almost as big as my springer, Jonny, and is the image of Ringo. I thought he was a springer when we first met. I'd say the line between large working cocker and springer is often quite fuzzy. I've met a springer girl who was smaller than many working cockers :dunno:
Whatever he is, Ringo is :luv: :luv: :luv:
-
Jasper is stunning :luv: and I think Fred and Ringo look very much alike so there's hope that he is part cocker! :005:
I really don't think the people we bought him from were dishonest at all and the mum and dad they have are definite working cockers. Mum is more black than white and dad is liver, the puppies were solid black, liver and white with ticking, black and white with ticking, and then Ringo more white than black with ticking. Yes my vet said that large working cockers and springers (especially in this colouring) are very similar.
He's the nicest dog I've ever had and the kids adore him so whatever size he gets we'll cope :lol2:
-
No words of wisdom; just wanted to say what a truly handsome boy you have :luv: :luv:
-
When I used to take Bella training there was an old friend there with a 'springer' anyway I saw him the other day and we were talking about dogs it turns out the springer is a working cocker (hides in shame although was 5 yrs ago and his dog was twice the size of Bella)
Hes lovely, its a bit hard to dispute if you saw the parents, can you ask them if either of their dogs have springer in them?
-
He's a large working cocker in my eyes - beautiful as well. :luv: I will always love the black and whites - my soulmate cocker was and I miss him. :luv:
One of my show cockers is a big lad, as big as a springer and if it wasn't for his ears - you would say springer!
-
I agree hes a beauty no matter what he is :luv:
I have lost count of the number of arguments i have had with people that say what a lovely springer Otto is and then get accused of lying when I tell them he's a Working Cocker
-
I think the lines between WC and springers are very blurred . We met a 6mth springer out the other day and it was exactly like Lila, same size but liver & white I didn't think it was a springer .Nearly everyone I meet out thinks Lila is a small springer but I have seen mum & dad and have her pedigree. Maybe buyers are being told what they want to hear. Wharever he is he's lovely :luv:
-
Im thinking that springers are never solid colours whereas cockers can be is that right?
Springers only come in liver/white or black/white?
-
I think if you go back far enough there may be a bit of springer in a lot of working cockers and if you go back even further if the dog was under 25 pounds it was a cocker over that a springer or field spaniel.
This is Dime my little black and white cocker who we lost last year.

Here are Molly (springer) in the middle and Bailey (working cocker) on the right as a comparison
I would say if you have seen the other pups in the litter and some were solids then Ringo is a cocker.
Bailey is a large cocker as was Spud (the black dog in the picture)

It looks like there's hardly any difference apart from markings and size :005: If you've nothing to compare to then it must be difficult to tell the difference, as in Ringo's case - he's gorgeous anyway, whether he's a sprocker or a cocker or a springer. :luv:
-
He is gorgeous, I can see cocker in his face, it may be there's some springer in his line way back but he's a lovely boy.
One of my boys is a B&W ticked show who as a pup I was often told was a springer one man even went as far as to say "he's can't be a cocker, he's got springer markings" :rofl1:

I have a spaniel who i say is a springer. However she was bought 7yrs ago as a chocolate roan cocker. she just never looked cocker enough to me. I contacted the kennel club and they asked me to take her to a cocker spaniel show judge locally so they could have a look. They took a look for all of a second and said shes not a cocker she's definitely a springer. I now have got a blue roan cocker and there not alike but similar... since joining COL and seeing the working cockers i am thinking that Molly could be a working cocker after all. I wouldnt change her for the world but ive gone so long saying shes a springer.... does it really matter shes a spaniel the best dogs in the world ( Bit Bias ) :D
-
Thanks all yes it doesn't matter to be honest we adore him :luv:
