Just trying to understand a bit more Riley is dark blue roan, when he came to us he had lots of light patches the he got darker and darker and was nearly black. Now he is loosing his puppy coast the lighter is coming back , so as he gets older will the roan go darker or will he probably stay lighter? I know its strange but its amazing the difference now from say three months ago.

Strange you should ask this. Gracie looks dark to me, but so many cocker friends are convinced she will be light once the puppy fluff has gone. Xx

I think Grace and Riley were similar colours, First one he is 9 weeks, second one he is 5 months then the third is last week aged nearly 9 months. It might not show much difference in photos but there is quite a bit more of the lighter now.

If there's generally more black hair than white, the black hair grows and covers the white giving the impression of the coat being darker than it really is.
As his coat moults the dark hair will be less as its shorter therefore giving the impression he's getting lighter ;)

So whats the diagnosis for when all the puppy coat is out, does that mean every time the hair grows he will be darker.?

He will only look darker.
To keep him looking lighter he will need his coat keeping short.

I have always had a soft spot for blue roans as Maureen, Pi and Pipkoi all know.
My first two girls were blue roan and blue roan and tan. When they went to the bridge I wanted something different and we had Fudge who was gorgeous chocolate and Tan, Danny our springer was gorgeous and liver and white, Brodie our handsome boy was black, tan and cream. Minnie is a black worker and handsome Dennis is Orange roan.
I now have my sweet little rescue girl, Rosie, who is a blue roan and she now completes my set. She has more black than my other blue's though

His colouring is sooo similar to Henry's! He's had the same pattern, even though he's only 7 months. He took a turn for the darker at about 12-14 weeks when suddenly he turned into a vaguely roany pup to almost black! In the past couple of weeks I've tried to strip out some of the (brownish) fluff on his back and some of the white gap between black patches (originally there were distinct patches, now it's just all black!) have started showing a bit again. I'd be interesting to see how Riley turns out, colour-wise, as I think Henry will continue to follow the same pattern. I wanted a dark one, but I do still want to see a bit of white (apart from the huge white mop on his forehead!).
Just reminded me of a funny thing my hubby said to me when we first saw a photo of him at 7 weeks - "are you sure he's going to be dark enough?" (I wanted a dark one). Little did I know he was a black cocker in silver pup's clothing!
